ELKINS, W.Va. – Entering Wednesday's contest, Notre Dame College led NCAA Division II by scoring four goals per game and No. 4 ranked Davis & Elkins College was second in D2 allowing 0.29 goals per contest. The Falcons led 1-0 at halftime before D&E took a 2-1 lead. A goal by NDC's
Antonio Bittencourt tied the game with less than three minutes remaining, and the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Falcons got on the board in the 16th minute as freshman
Ailton Fagner Silva rocketed a pass into the box, which was headed into the goal by junior
Ned Dry. Dry now has 10 goals this season.
Notre Dame's goalkeeper, sophomore
Pedro Alves, was active early in the game. In the first eight minutes, the Senators had already taken three shots on goal and Alves became a wall, stopping each of them.
The Falcons went into halftime leading 1-0. Both teams took four shots in the first 45 minutes.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Christhian Bosquez found Dominique Castano to give D&E their first goal and tie the contest at one.
Twelve minutes later, in the 65th minute, Davis & Elkins struck again. This time, Castano stole an NDC pass before the Falcons could get the ball past midfield. In a reversal of the first goal, he found Bosquez, who gave D&E their first lead of the night at 2-1.
Following a foul and a yellow card in the 87th minute, freshman
Taylor Dyson launched a free kick into the box. The ball was deflected before Bittencourt found space and used a sliding kick to send the ball past the goalkeeper.
Davis & Elkins had only allowed three goals in 10 games this season, and no team had scored more than one goal against their defense.
Alves made one more save, in the 91st minute, punching away a shot attempt by Daniel Cerezo.
The Falcons scored on both of the shots on goal that they had on the night. The Senators outshot the Falcons 11-6.
"Last night showed immense courage in a very difficult environment," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "We had every kind of challenge thrown at us and this young team handled it very well."
NDC travels to No. 6 University of Charleston, on Oct. 17, for a 4 p.m. start.
