Avon, OH - The Notre Dame College Falcons earned their second win of the 2020 season to open up their season at home with a split, featuring a walk-off win, against the Lake Erie College Storm.
The Falcons stuck first in the contest with a single up the middle by Shane Mittleman, driving in a pair of runs and taking a two-run lead over the Storm. The Storm came back in the third inning, putting up six runs, which sealed the first game in favor of Lake Erie with a final score of 7-4.
The second game of the double header featured three ties. In the first and fourth innings of the game, both teams put up one and four runs respectively. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ben Ross led off with a double down the left field line, and was moved to third by Drake May. With two outs, Ross scored on a single up the middle by Pat Aitken, and the Falcons took a 6-5 lead over the Storm.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Storm tied the game again on a sacrifice fly. Although Notre Dame did not match the Storm in the bottom of the sixth inning, Todd Marshall, pitching in relief, earned a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to end the inning, becoming the pitcher of record for the game.
Joseph Paskell singled to center field to start the comeback, and was replaced on-base by pinch runner Luke Thompson, who was moved to second base off a sacrifice bunt by Ben Ross. After originally being called out in a 5-3 put-out, the call was overturned and Thompson, who moved to third on the play, gave the Falcons runners on first and third base.
The Storm intentionally walked Austin Mora to try and get a ground-ball double-play, which loaded the bases for Notre Dame. For his second time in the game, Pat Aitken was put in the position to drive home the go-ahead run, but this time it was for a walk-off win.
Aitken hit a ground ball between the pitcher's mound and third base. The Lake Erie pitcher scooped the ball up and threw it to the catcher, who dropped it, and the Falcons sealed the deal with a 7-6 walk-off victory in the second game of the double-header.
With the win, Todd Marshall earned his first win of the 2020 season (1-0), and the Notre Dame Falcons baseball team improves to a 2-8 record overall.
The Falcons return to Sprenger Stadium on Tuesday afternoon for a day game and non-conference matchup against the University of Findlay Oilers (G-MAC).
