WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – On Friday, Notre Dame College split the double-header on their second day in Florida. They fell to Felician University, 8-3, but then scored five runs in the fourth inning of game two to defeat the College of Saint Rose, 6-3.
In the first game of the day, Felician bookended the game with big innings. They were able to put four runs on the board in the first inning and three more runs in the seventh.
NDC got on the scoreboard thanks to the first two RBI of freshman
Sydnie Jarrett's collegiate career. Jarrett hit an RBI double in the second and then an RBI single in the fourth.
The Falcons did cut the lead down to two runs when senior
Taylor Olson knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, before Felician added on.
Notre Dame earned their first win of the season in the second game of the day against the College of Saint Rose.
During NDC's turn at bat in the second inning, a walk, a groundout and a single put runners on first and third for freshman
Emily Marsh, who singled in the first run of the game.
Saint Rose was down to their final out of the third inning before they recorded three consecutive hits. A double, single and home run brought home three runs in the inning.
The Falcons did not wait long, as they had a hit parade in the top of the fourth. Also down to their final out in the inning, Marsh singled again and junior
Katelyn Rheude walked. That set up the inning as the next three batters singled. Junior
Tia Rizzo's base hit drove in a run and junior
McKenzie Zigmont brought home two runs with a single. Up 4-3, NDC was given a couple insurance runs after an error by the Golden Knights' shortstop cleared the bases and put junior
Lexi Rehm at second base.
Neither team scored another run and Zigmont really settled into the pitcher's circle. Including the final out of the third inning, she retired 13 of the final 14 batters faced.
The first three hitters in the NDC lineup (Rizzo,
Alexi Maciejowski, Zigmont) had five combined hits. The Falcons had eight hits in the game, but none were for extra bases. Zigmont picked up her first win of the campaign, striking out six hitters and walked zero in seven innings.
Today, the Falcons end their Florida trip by playing Georgian Court University at 2:45 p.m. and then the University of Sciences at 5 p.m.
