Softball splits final day in Florida, Linberger ties record in game two

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Notre Dame College's six games in three days came to an end with a double-header on Saturday. The Falcons lost to Georgian Court University, 6-4, but bounced back and beat the University of Sciences, 6-2.

To start the day against Georgian Court, the first hit that NDC pitcher Taylor Olson allowed came in the third inning. A single and then a throwing error set up an opportunity for Malia Black to drive in two. She did just that, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

After GCU tacked on another run, NDC tied the game. The bottom of the fourth began with McKenzie Zigmont and Lexi Rehm hitting a single. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Kristen Peace drove in a run with a single of her own. Two more runs came home on an error by the second baseman.

An RBI single by Brenna Lorek in the fifth inning was the last Notre Dame run scored in the game. Georgian Court added two runs in the top of the fifth inning and one more in the sixth.

For NDC, Lorek went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kathryn Smith and Zigmont each had two hits.

In the second game of the day, Notre Dame spread out their six runs over the seven innings to grab a victory against USciences. Down 1-0 in the second inning, Ariel Linberger stepped up to the plate and doubled, bringing home a run.

In the fifth inning, Linberger entered the batter's box with bases loaded and hit her second double of the game, which plated two more runs.

Leading by just one run in the seventh inning, Linberger hit her third double of the game, bringing in her fourth RBI of the day. With her three doubles, Linberger tied the program record.

Later in the seventh, Taylor Olson hit her first home run of the season and second of her career. The two-run shot put the Falcons on top 6-2.

In the game, Rehm scored three times, after going 1-for-2 at the plate, with a walk. Zigmont was the pitcher for NDC and picked up her second win of the season. Over her last two starts, Zigmont has allowed three earned runs in 14 innings, with seven strikeouts.

During the Florida trip, Linberger went 7-for-15 at the plate with five RBI. Zigmont is currently hitting .400 (8-for-20).

The Falcons will play West Liberty University, at home, on March 14. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
