Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Notre Dame falls to Gannon in home opener

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In the first game on Normandy Field in 2020, Notre Dame College worked their way back from an early deficit and took a 6-5 lead. Both teams had a strong second half, but Gannon held onto a 17-14 win.

Gannon was on the attack early in the game and within the first three minutes of the contest, they had taken four shots against the NDC goalkeeper, sophomore Ellejanna Cicione.

After a few turnovers, the Golden Knights made their way down the field. An NDC foul gave Courtney Young a free position shot, which she cashed in for the first goal of the game at the 24:46-mark in the first half. Not long after, GU won the draw control and Erin Rotondo put another point on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Katie Wendell won the draw control for Notre Dame and took the ball to Gannon's side of the field. Her shot hit the post, but freshman Karsin Pruett scored on a free position shot. The Falcons were on the board with 24:16 to go before halftime.

The Golden Knights scored two more goals before NDC went on a 3-0 run, which included two goals by freshman Kendal Johnson. With 20:25 on the clock, one of her goals tied the game at four. Johnson would finish the game with six goals.

Wendell found herself in the right place at the right time as she scored back-to-back goals about three minutes later. A turnover caused by freshman Ebony Reddick led to Wendell's first goal and then she would give the Falcons their first lead of the day, 6-5, after receiving a pass from Johnson.

After that point, the game would be tied two more times before the end of the half. GU scored the final two goals of the half to take a 9-7 advantage.

The Falcons won the first draw control of the second half and junior Emily Thomson finished the possession with a goal to pull within one. But, Gannon caused a turnover and then scored on a free position shot. The Falcons pulled within one several times, but Gannon answered nearly every goal that NDC had in the second half with a goal of their own.

With 3:20 on the clock, Notre Dame caused a much needed turnover and ran down the field quickly. Reddick worked her way through the defense to make the score 16-14 in favor of Gannon. However, that would be the Falcons' final goal of the game.

The two teams were even at 27 shots on goal for the game. Johnson led the way with her six goals while Wendell had two. Wendell's eight draw controls is tied for fifth in NDC history for a single game. Pruett and Reddick had two goals and Thomson finished with one goal and two assists. Cicione had 10 saves and four caused turnovers. Sophomore Victoria Eiland had three caused turnovers.

The Falcons will travel to play Ashland University, in Ashland, Ohio, on February 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
