NDC's comeback attempt falls short against Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Notre Dame College and Walsh University battled in a low scoring first half. NDC tied the game at seven in the second half, but Walsh University was able to grab the lead and won by a score of 10-7, on Friday.

Before the first goal was scored, a combined six shots were taken by the two teams. Walsh got on the board first when Lindsay Hindman scored a man-up goal with 24:10 on the clock.

After the first 10 minutes of action, Walsh had taken six shots to NDC's three.

Notre Dame's first goal of the game came with just 7:16 remaining in the first half. The Falcons had called upon sophomore Katie Wendell several times throughout the first half, and Wendell scored on her fourth shot of the day.

At halftime, the Cavaliers led 4-2. Wendell and freshman Ebony Reddick had the goals for NDC and, on defense, freshman Alicyn Loberg recorded two caused turnovers.

At the 27-minute mark of the second half, Walsh had back-to-back free position shots that were kept out of the net by NDC goaltender Ellejanna Cicione and the Notre Dame defense. However, WU did score the first two goals of the second half and led 6-2.

After the Cavaliers went up by four goals, Reddick won the next draw control and drove down the field. She shot the ball over the goalkeeper's stick into the net.

NDC's defense forced a possession clock violation and the offense went back down the field. Reddick received a pass from Loberg and angled around to the front of the goal for an open shot. After Cicione saved a shot on one end, junior Emily Thomson scored on a free position shot with 11:54 to go. The Falcons were down by just one goal, 6-5.

Five minutes later, junior Bridie Schmalz scored two consecutive goals to tie the game at seven.

Walsh responded with a draw control and a quick goal. In the final six minutes of the contest, the Cavaliers scored two more goals and NDC took just one more shot.

Reddick ended the game with three goals and two groundballs. Loberg totaled four caused turnovers and grabbed five groundballs to go along with her assist.

Notre Dame will play Lake Erie College, in Painesville, Ohio, on March 1. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
