Falcons score six runs against UIndy, but fall by one

WESTFIELD, Ind. – In the opener of a three-game series, Notre Dame College scored six runs on eight hits, including three extra base hits, but the University of Indianapolis grabbed a late lead and won, 7-6, on Friday.

The Falcons' offense got a timely hit in the first inning, but they also took advantage of Indianapolis' mistakes. Lukas Thompson led off with a single and Shane Mittleman was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a ground out before Joseph Paskell was also hit by a pitch. With two outs, Drake May reached base on an error, which plated the first run of the game. Ben Ross then dropped a single into right field, which scored the second run.

UIndy made a pitching change to begin the second inning, but it did not phase Matt Richards, who led off with a triple to right center field. Thompson drove him in with a double down the line in right, giving Notre Dame a 3-0 lead.

The first two batters in the bottom of the second inning quickly closed the gap to one-run. Will Smithey walked and Bo Minor homered to left field. NDC's pitcher Hayden Parker settled in on the mound and retired the five of the next six hitters that he faced.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Greyhounds tied the game at three. After a leadoff single, two groundouts moved the runner to third. Justyn Eichbaum stepped up and doubled in the tying run. Indianapolis would later take a 4-3 lead, after a runner scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning.

The Falcons struck back in the top of the eighth. With one out in the inning, the Greyhounds committed two consecutive errors, putting Corey Miley on third base and May on first. Ross stepped up and hit a single to right field, plating both runners and giving NDC a 5-4 advantage. Ross finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, with three RBI.

In a swing of momentum, UIndy stepped up in the bottom of the eighth after the first two hitters went down on strikes. Back-to-back walks set the table for Trey Smith, who knocked in three runs with a homer to left.

The Falcons gave themselves a chance in the top of the ninth inning. Thompson led off with his third hit of the game, a single to center. That was followed by an RBI triple by Mittleman, making the score 7-6 in favor of UIndy. But, NDC was unable to cash in the tying run.

Ross has now had a hit in five of the first six games to start his freshman campaign while Thompson has totaled six hits, two doubles and three RBI over the two games that he has played.

Notre Dame will play the University of Indianapolis tomorrow, at 1 p.m.
