Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball plays four games in West Virginia

BECKLEY, W.Va. – February weather changed Notre Dame College's plan for the early part of their schedule. After canceling two games in South Carolina and three games in Missouri, the Falcons traveled to play four games over two days at Epling Stadium. NDC fell in two games against Bluefield State College and two against Wayne State University.

On Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame took on Bluefield State. After the Big Blues jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Falcons responded in the bottom of the fourth. After having a man in scoring position in the first three innings, NDC broke through when Corey Miley led off with a single and then Aaron Miller doubled him home. Miller moved to third on a single and then Parker Hray made the score 4-2 with a sacrifice fly.

Bluefield State scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning, on a passed ball. They would win game one by a score of 5-2.

For NDC, Miley went 2-for-3 at the plate and Brady Biglin gave NDC three innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run.

In game two, Bluefield State jumped out to a big lead in the first inning, scoring four times. The Falcons would get one back in the bottom of the first inning, when Nick Farrell hit his first home run of the season.

The Big Blues tacked on a run in the third and the fourth inning, but Notre Dame would cut the lead down to three runs in the fourth inning. Drake May led off with a double and Hray reached on an error. Later in the inning, Ben Ross would hit an RBI single. A double steal by the Falcons would send Ross to second as Hray stole home, making the score 6-3 in favor of BSC.

NDC's Joseph Paskell led off the fifth inning with a home run to close within two runs of Bluefield State, but that would be as close as they would get. The Falcons had two runners on base in the sixth inning, but did not score in the inning.

Leading the way for Notre Dame was Shane Mittleman, Farrell and May as each player had two hits. The top four hitters in the NDC lineup combined for six of NDC's eight hits and totaled all three RBI. Hayden Parker did not allow a hit over three innings of relief on the mound.

Notre Dame had their troubles with Wayne State on Monday afternoon. The Falcons took the lead in the third inning of game one when Matt Richards scored on an error and then Miley hit a sacrifice fly. But, in the top of the fourth, Wayne State struck for eight runs on seven hits. That would be all they needed to win 8-3.

Wayne State's offense jumped on the board early in game two and they went on to win 16-1. Brennan Cox got the win for the Warriors after throwing four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.

For NDC, Cameron Kern, Parker, Alec Mendoza and Todd Marshall combined for five innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run on three hits and totaled eight strikeouts.

Notre Dame will travel to the University of Indianapolis on February 21 for a three-game series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
