Scarberry has record night against Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In a seesaw battle on Wednesday night, Notre Dame College fell to Fairmont State University, 81-76. Notre Dame shot 57-percent in the first half and finished at 48-percent shooting for the game.

NDC fell behind by six points early in the game, after Fairmont State knocked down their first two 3-pointers. With 15:59 to go in the first half, a long range shot by Drew Scarberry gave Notre Dame their first lead of the game, 13-12, and capped a 13-6 run.

Fairmont State led 20-17 with just under 14 minutes on the clock, but Notre Dame's offense began to steal the show. Over the next five-and-a-half minutes, the NDC Falcons outscored Fairmont State, 19-6. During the run, seniors Drew Scarberry (7) and Deanthony Owens (8) combined for 15 points. The Notre Dame lead increased to 10 points, 36-26, with 8:07 remaining before halftime.

Multiple players on the court got off to incredibly hot starts. For NDC, Scarberry was shooting 6-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from three at one point, while Owens started 5-for-5, including 2-for-2 from long range. For FSU, Isaiah Sanders shot 3-for-3 from the three-point line and Kenzie Melko went 6-for-8 from the field.

Notre Dame stayed in front, 38-30, with five minutes to go in the first half. Then, just like they did at the beginning of the game, Fairmont State knocked down back-to-back threes. A steal and a dunk by Melko gave Fairmont State some momentum as the game was tied at 38.

The FSU Falcons finished the half on a 15-5 run. A three by Levi Frankland with 39-seconds left made the score 45-43, in favor of Fairmont State, as the teams entered the locker rooms. Owens had 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting and Scarberry scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, in the first half.

The second half was just as up-and-down as the first. Frankland tied the game at 45 to begin the stanza, then Fairmont State went ahead by four points before a 9-2 Notre Dame run gave the lead right back to the NDC Falcons, 54-51.

The second half featured eight lead changes and incredible swings in momentum. NDC led by as many as six points and trailed by as many as five.

From the 11:34-mark to the 10:28-mark, Scarberry scored nine straight Notre Dame points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out an assist. The Falcons led 65-59 with 10:28 remaining in the contest.

The home team pushed back to take the lead, but NDC responded and two free throws by Owens gave the Notre Dame Falcons a 73-70 advantage with nearly five minutes to go.

The FSU Falcons clawed their way back and knocked down all six of their free throws with under a minute to play, securing the win.

Scarberry tied a career-high, that he set in his freshman season, with 31 points. He also made nine shots, which is a season-high, and connected on ten free throws, a career-high. He tied a career-high by grabbing 11 rebounds. Owens had 18 points and six rebounds in the game. NDC out-rebounded Fairmont State, 33-30.

FSU shot 51-percent and had four players score in double-digits.

Notre Dame will honor their seniors on February 15, prior to a game with Frostburg State University. The game is scheduled to tip at 4 p.m.
