CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame College shot over 50-percent from the field, for the third consecutive game. The University of Charleston, who sits atop the Mountain East Conference, shot 59-percent and scored 50 first half points. The Golden Eagles' offense won the battle as they beat the Falcons, 95-70.
In the first seven minutes of the contest, the lead was swapped back and forth, four times. In that time, Notre Dame shot 64-percent while Charleston got off to a 62-percent shooting start.
Right before the first media timeout, senior
Drew Scarberry received a pass from freshman
Jordan Burton and knocked down a three pointer to put the Falcons ahead 16-15, with 13:36 remaining in the first half. Scarberry, who recently moved into the top-10 in points in NDC history, would finish the game with 10 points and six rebounds.
With 13:08 on the clock, Charleston grabbed the lead, 17-16, following a layup by Lamont McManus. That was the beginning of an 11-2 run that gave UC a 26-18 advantage, with just under nine minutes to go. The Golden Eagles would hold onto that lead for the rest of the contest.
Charleston would push the lead as high as 17 points before the halftime break. The Golden Eagles, who shot 60-percent in the first half, led 50-35 as the teams went into the locker rooms.
For the first seven minutes of the second half, the Falcons' deficit remained around 15 points, before the Golden Eagles started to expand their lead. Charleston continued to shoot well, going 16-for-28 (57-percent) in the second half.
Senior
Deanthony Owens had an incredible second half for Notre Dame. Owens totaled 17 points and shot 7-for-8 from the field. He finished with 26 points, one shy of his season-high, while shooting 67-percent. Sophomore
Levi Frankland totaled 20 points on 57-percent shooting. Notre Dame shot 52-percent for the game and 53-percent from three.
Five players scored in double-digits for UC with Drew Rackley leading the way with 21 points, which included five 3-pointers. Charleston made 17 shots from long range and ended the game shooting 52-percent from outside. UC also had 33 rebounds to NDC's 19, becoming the first team to outrebound the Falcons since Concord did so on December 7.
Basketball is back in the Murphy Gymnasium on January 22, when NDC battles Wheeling University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
