EDINBORO, Pa. – The Notre Dame College women's soccer team earned its first win of 2019 by scoring three goals on the road against a team the program had never won against before. The Falcons 3-2 win over Edinboro showed great signs of things to come as the team rebounded from an early loss.
NDC played from behind early after the Fighting Scots scored in the fourth minute of play, but the Falcons kept fighting.
Kazarie Kephart, a junior transfer in her debut season, tied things up with a goal in nearly 20 minutes later. Kephart was set up by a long pass from
Katja Josipovic.
Another junior transfer scoring her first career goal at Notre Dame was
Michelle Escobar. Escobar converted on a penalty kick to give the Falcons their first lead of the 2019 season. The lead did not last long, however as Edinboro shot and made a penalty kick of its own to tie it up 2-2 at halftime.
The NDC offense roared back in the second half with a total of eight shots, four of which were on goal. The onslaught of pressure eventually broke through as freshman
Kady Cushing completed the trio of newcomers scoring their first goals at Notre Dame. A corner kick from Josipovic found
Andrea Spinelli whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but rebounded by Cushing who headed in the game-winner for NDC.
The Falcons, now 1-1, completed the comeback and showed their resiliency after a loss against Gannon earlier in the week.
"Every loss is different," Shiels said. "I think the good thing about our loss to Gannon is that we played well in the last 35 minutes. That gave us something to build on going into today's game. Our team rebounded well and kept pressing to win one.
"It's always tough to play up there so to get a win at their place is really great. We made a couple mistakes, which are going to happen early in the year, but the players didn't let it bring them down. We came back in the second half to play really well."
Notre Dame has a week to prepare for its next opponent, who they will play next Saturday, September 14. The Falcons will take on Lake Erie at home at 12 p.m.
