SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - Neither team could get much of a rhythm going in a game with 37 fouls, six yellow cards, five offsides and one red card, but Gannon won 1-0 against Notre Dame College women's soccer team after a long shot hit the net in the upper right corner.
The contest was scoreless at halftime as neither team could find a flow. The Falcons were unable to get a shot off in the first 45 minutes while Gannon was held to just three attempts. Notre Dame adjusted at the half to get six shots off while still holding the Golden Knights to three.
Gannon scored quickly after the break as Megan McCartney tallied the only goal of the contest in the 47th minute. McCartney, from 35 yards out, placed the ball perfectly in the upper right corner of the goal after kicking it from the left side of midfield.
In NDC's first game of the season, head coach
Mike Shiels gave fans a look at many new players. Six of the 11 starters in the debut game of 2019 were newcomers. Junior transfer
Ellie Gess made her presence felt by leading the team with three shots.
The Falcons made a few final pushes towards the end of the game, but were unable to find the goal. With 80 seconds left to play, freshman
Kady Cushing looked to have a perfect chance. Cushing, close to the goal headed the ball towards the left side of the net while the Gannon goalkeeper was on the right. But one of the Golden Knights was in the right place at the right time and was able to head the ball out of the goal.
Notre Dame will play its second game this weekend at Edinboro. The Falcons travel to play the Fighting Scots on Saturday, September 7, at 1 p.m.
