WHEELING, W.Va. – As they have done often on their three-game winning streak, Notre Dame College scored multiple goals in a matter of a few minutes on Wednesday night. After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame scored in the 51st minute and the 53rd minute to beat Wheeling University, 2-0.
In the first half, Wheeling had a few good looks at the Falcons' goal. In the 39th minute, following a throw in, Javier Mangado took a pass and moved the ball slightly to the left side of the goal.
Mangado then took a shot from the top of the box that NDC goalkeeper
Daniele De Angelis had to dive for and knock off line.
Later in the half, with about two minutes to go, a free kick by Gaizka Redondo, from about 36 yards away, went high.
The second half was all about the Falcons' opportunities, and they took advantage, twice.
The first goal came in the 51st minute and it all started when the Falcons stole the ball near the 40-yard line. Sophomore
Nicholas Felician took a pass and was running in the middle of the field before finding junior
Varis Singh Khera. Khera gathered the pass and outran a defender next to him, setting up a shot that found the net. Khera now leads the team with two game winners this season.
Two minutes later, senior
Giulio Bellei placed a perfect pass in front of Felician from the right side of the field. Felician ran into the box and was tripped by WU goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman, who dove for the ball but missed. Junior
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin took the penalty shot that went just under the diving keeper.
NDC almost scored again with about four minutes remaining. A pass came from left side into the box where Felician slipped behind defenders, but his shot hit the left post.
With two minutes left, a crazy sequence took place. The first shot by Felician was low and to the left but Zimmerman was able to knock the ball away. Junior
Lars Brudvik then gathered the ball and took a shot that bounced off the crossbar, before Wheeling cleared the ball.
For Notre Dame, Khera recorded his third goal of the season, while Bohlin now has two. De Angelis tied his season-high with four saves. He, and the defense, recorded the team's third shutout of the campaign. NDC has allowed just one goal in their last three contests.
On September 29, NDC hosts Frostburg State University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
