Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Notre Dame scores twice, defense holds in second half to win

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In their first ever matchup with Frostburg State University, Notre Dame College men's soccer earned their fifth victory of the season by scoring twice in the first half and then holding off a charging FSU offense in the second half for a 2-1 victory, on Sunday.

The first half featured a very well-structured attack by the NDC offense. Right after the opening kick, sophomore Nicholas Felician almost had, at least, one goal. Between the 6th minute and the 13th minute, Felician had taken three shots, with one being a header off a corner kick that nearly snuck through.

Not long after that onslaught by the Notre Dame offense, senior Lewis Norvock scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Junior Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin used a corner kick to pass the ball to senior Julian Castro, outside of the box. Castro then passed to Norvock who turned and found space to convert a goal.

About 13 minutes later, Felician was fouled in the box. For the second consecutive game, Bohlin lined up for a penalty kick and drove the ball past FSU's goalkeeper Joel Assal. The goal was Bohlin's third of the season and his first game-winner.

NDC totaled 10 shots in the first half, including seven shots on goal. On the other side, Frostburg State took just two shots.

The second half was much different as Notre Dame was playing on the defensive side of the ball much more often and tempers flared several times as the teams played aggressively.

Just under 20 minutes into the second half, FSU's Randy Putnam scored the first goal on just the team's fifth shot of the day. Jose Rodriguez passed the ball from one side of the goal to the other where Putnam put the ball in goal before senior Daniele De Angelis could get into position.

The Bobcats nearly tied the game at two in the 74th minute. Louie Kerdock took the ball off a pass and took a shot that had a chance of finding the net, but was lifted a bit too high and over the crossbar.

Frostburg State outshot Notre Dame 5-4 in the second half.

"We played a very good first half, passing the ball well and creating chances. The second half was a very physical contest that we weathered well to win the game," said head coach Carl Nolan. "Frostburg State is a very good team that is well coached and well organized. We are pleased with the three points today."

De Angelis saved two shots and Assal saved six for FSU. With the win today, De Angelis has 38 wins and is now tied with Alex Klein for the most wins in program history.

Urbana Univeristy is next up for the Falcons, on October 3, as NDC takes the road trip. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
