SALEM, Va. – Notre Dame College was slated to play two games on Friday and the Falcons fell to West Virginia State University, 1-0 in game one. But, rain and storms moved through the Moyer Sports Complex and NDC was unable to finish their game with Shepherd University.
In a tough first round matchup, against the top seed in the South Division, the Falcons pitched very well against West Virginia State. Sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont had to get out of trouble several times in the pitcher's circle, but held the team with the best batting average in the MEC to one run on six hits. She also held Paige Scruggs to an 0-for-2 day with a strikeout. Scruggs had come into the game fifth in the conference in batting average.
The Yellow Jackets looked like they would get on the board early after a first inning leadoff single, a steal and another single put runners on the corners. Later, a two out walk loaded the bases before a pop out ended the threat. Another big opportunity came in the sixth inning, when WVSU had a runner on third base with one out, but a run did not cross the plate.
West Virginia State scored the only run of the game in the third inning. With one out and runners on first and second base, Emma Ruth plated a run with a single that dropped into left field.
The Yellow Jackets' Kayleigh Thompson was the only player in the game with two hits. Emily Thompson (9-4) got the win after striking out five in a complete game shutout.
The Falcons had a runner reach second base in both the third and sixth inning.
Zigmont (10-17) threw six innings, allowing one run and struck out three hitters, for NDC.
After Shepherd, the two seed in the North, dropped their game to the University of Charleston, the NDC-Shepherd matchup was set. After Notre Dame stranded a runner on first base in the top of the first inning, SU loaded the bases with a single and back-to-back walks before the rain moved in, suspending the contest.
The game will resume, tomorrow, at 8 a.m.
