Notre Dame drops second game of MEC tournament

SALEM, Va. – The rain moved out and the Mountain East Conference Tournament games from Friday were resumed after being suspended. Notre Dame College and Shepherd University began early Saturday morning and all the runs were scored in two innings as Shepherd won by a score of 5-1.

The game was in the bottom of the first inning with one out and bases loaded for the early morning start on Saturday. Shepherd took advantage of the three runners on base when Nicole Purtell hit a ball to second base, which was misplayed. The error allowed two runs to score. With two outs, a single by Ashley Burger plated a run and she was followed by Leann Brown, who scored two more with single to right field. None of the runs were charged to the NDC pitcher, Taylor Olson.

Down 5-0 in the sixth inning, NDC scored their only run of the game when senior Shelby Stephens homered to left field, her seventh of the season. Stephens finishes her career fourth in NDC history with 205 hits and her 65 hits in 2019 are sixth most in one season at NDC.

Olson (11-17) pitched six innings and struck out three in the loss. She allowed five hits in the game but just two after the first inning. With 121 strikeouts this season, Olson moves into seventh place in single season history at NDC. She also pitched 174 innings, which is third highest in a season for the program.

For Shepherd, Lori Sturgill (16-6) started the game in the circle and picked up the win, pitching four scoreless innings. She allowed just one hit. Cheyenne Van Pelt entered the game, pitching the final three innings. She allowed a run, but, struck out two hitters.

The Falcons finish the season with 22 overall wins, which is an improvement of three games over last year's record.
