PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Notre Dame College scored all their runs in the sixth inning in game one and the seventh inning in game two, against Lake Erie College. On Tuesday, the Falcons collected 21 hits and, along with great pitching, won by scores of 7-2 and 2-0.
Notre Dame (16-20) looked poised to score early, putting together three consecutive singles in the first inning and then loading the bases in the top of the fourth inning. However, Lake Erie (9-17) scored first, plating a run with a Cheyanne Hamel RBI single in the fourth and another run in the fifth inning on a Taylor Phillips RBI single.
In the sixth inning, Notre Dame's offense came to life. Senior
Halli Swiger led off with a single and moved to third base on two passed balls. Three consecutive walks allowed the first run to score. Two batters later, with still only one out, freshman
Rhianna Weall pushed two runs home with a double. Freshman
Mikaela Fording hit an RBI single before senior
Shelby Stephens doubled home the fifth run of the inning. NDC accumulated two more runs on an RBI groundout and then a single by Swiger, her second base hit of the inning. The Falcons sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs.
Weall went 3-for-4 in the game and Stephens was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4. Both players had a double. The first five NDC hitters in the lineup combined for all 11 hits, six RBI and four runs scored. Sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont (7-10) got the win after allowing just two runs in a complete game, striking out seven. She retired eight hitters in a row from the end of the first inning through the third inning.
In game two, NDC junior
Taylor Olson found herself battling in a pitcher's duel. The Falcons' offense had her back, scoring the only two runs of the game in the seventh inning. Sophomore
Brenna Lorek doubled to start the inning and then pinch-hitter
McKenzie Zigmont hit an RBI single to right field. Later in the inning, Stephens hit another RBI single.
Just like Zigmont in game one, Olson (8-10) retired eight in a row from the first inning until the fourth. She finished her complete game shutout, striking out nine. Weall and Stephens both had two hits in the game and ended the day with five hits and six hits, respectively. The first five hitters in the order combined for seven hits, in the second game.
Rachel Ward (0-2) took the loss but allowed just two runs in seven innings of work in the pitcher's circle for LEC.
Notre Dame is will play Urbana University in another road double-header, tomorrow. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 and 5 p.m.
