URBANA, Ohio – Notre Dame College extended their winning streak to four games as they defeated Urbana University, twice, on Wednesday. NDC won in five innings, 8-0, in the first game and then plated four runs in the seventh inning to pull away and win, 7-1, in game two. For the second consecutive day, the offense collected over 20 hits and the pitching allowed less than two runs.
The game started slow from the offensive standpoint, with Urbana (5-33, 2-16 MEC) collecting the only hit through the first two innings. But in the third inning, NDC freshman
Mikaela Fording singled with one out. After a fielder's choice put junior
Alyssa Larson on first base, freshman
Rhianna Weall made sure the run scored with double to right center.
Sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont had an RBI base hit and sophomore
Brenna Lorek grounded out for an RBI to put Notre Dame (18-20, 6-10 MEC) on top 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, senior
Erin Calhoun reached base on a fielder's choice and she was followed by senior
Shelby Stephens, who doubled for an RBI.
NDC finished the job in the sixth inning. Lorek hit an RBI double, Fording knocked in a run on a triple and Weall capped the four-run inning with two-run homer to left, the first of her career. Urbana did not score in the bottom of the inning and the game was over.
For Notre Dame, Weall had three hits and three RBI. She was a triple shy of the cycle, hitting a single, double and home run. In her last five games, Weall has six RBI and 12 hits. Stephens and Fording both had two hits. Stephens and Lorek recorded a double and Fording hit her team-leading second triple of the season. In the pitcher's circle, Zigmont (8-10) recorded her second shutout of the season, allowing just four hits.
Stephens, who had four hits and three RBI in the double-header, hit a two-run home run in the first inning of game two. Urbana cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kayleigh Pate led off with a single and Mykee Holtz doubled to right center.
Lorek hit an RBI single in the sixth inning, building the NDC lead to 3-1. In the seventh, Calhoun doubled in a run, Swiger doubled in two runs and junior
Ariel Linberger hit a sacrifice fly to score Swiger and put the Falcons up, 7-1.
The Falcons' two-through-five hitters in the lineup went 7-for-16 with five RBI and five runs scored. Stephens is now on a six game hit streak with four of the games being of the multi-hit variety. Calhoun and Swiger each had a double in the game and Lorek had three hits. Junior
Taylor Olson (9-10) allowed one run and struck out eight hitters. She has k'd 17 batters over her last two starts.
"I'm proud of the way we have played this week, so far," said Head Coach
Kelsey Stopp. "The pitching has been outstanding. They are doing their job in the circle and that's what we need. On the offense side of things, Shelby, Rhianna and Brenna have been killing it and I am impressed with the way they are swinging the bat. We have a big weekend coming up and I know the girls are excited to keep grinding."
The Falcons come home to play the University of Charleston on April 13 with first pitches scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
