SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- A
Shelby Stephens' home run in game two of the double-header sent the game into extra innings, but the University of Charleston won, 8-4, in nine innings. In game one, the Falcons fell, 12-1, in five innings.
The Charleston offense was in full force in game one, as Haleigh Christopher hit a two-run home run and then Brionna Bowman doubled in a third run in the top of the third inning. In the fifth inning, UC sent 13 hitters to the plate, scoring nine runs on nine hits.
Junior
Alyssa Larson hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the only NDC run on the scoreboard.
The Golden Eagles had 16 hits and six players had multi-hit games. Pitcher Carly Turner (13-8) pitched all five innings and allowed just one run. For the Falcons, Larson went 2-for-2.
The second game was an exciting back-and-forth affair that resulted in the first extra-inning home game for NDC.
UC plated two runs in the second inning, but NDC started their comeback in the bottom of the second when junior
Ariel Linberger homered to left field. The Falcons tied the game in the fourth inning. Freshman
Rhianna Weall singled with one out and sophomore
Kristen Peace pinch-ran. Peace stole second base and then scored on a triple by freshman
Mikaela Fording.
Larson continued her impressive day by leading off the fifth inning with a single. Senior
Erin Calhoun laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second base. The next batter, senior
Shelby Stephens, hit a single into right field. Charleston's Brionna Bowman picked the ball up in the outfield and made a throwing error, trying to get Stephens out at first. Larson scored to give Notre Dame a 3-2 advantage.
The Golden Eagles scored two runs on back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the sixth inning. Once again, NDC came back, this time with one out in the seventh. Stephens lifted a game-tying homer to center field.
In the ninth inning, Charleston scored four runs in the ninth inning to win the game.
For the Falcons, Larson added two more hits in game two while Stephens also had two hits. UC's Christopher homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
The Falcons' next games against West Virginia State University will now be played on April 16, due to weather. They will begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
