Falcons score flurry of runs late against No. 8 Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - The Notre Dame College baseball team suffered a 16-5 loss at No. 8 Mercyhurst on Tuesday afternoon, but the Falcons were able to show their skills late in the game as they scored four runs in the final three innings.

The top-ranked Lakers got off to a roaring start, scoring a total of 14 runs in the second, third and fourth innings. But Notre Dame outscored their hosts 4-2 in the final five innings of the single contest.

The four late runs added to a run scored by Zach Santoro in the third inning after a sacrifice fly from Rick Phillips. Santoro was also responsible for driving in the final run of the game in the ninth inning, scoring Naja Garcia. Prior to the Falcons fifth and final run, Drake May batted in Corey Miley while Matt Richards scored an unearned run in the seventh inning, and Adam Purdy hit in May in the ninth.

Joseph Paskell also provided some highlights for the Falcons as he recorded two hits, including a double in the third inning.

Pitchers Zarek Simkovich and Kevin Guzik were on the mound in the final two innings for NDC and struck out four batters while allowing zero hits.

Notre Dame will play a four-game series at Fairmont State this weekend, April 13 and 14. Both days' doubleheaders are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. starts.
