GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State College put five runs on the board in the third inning of game one and won 6-3. Notre Dame College bounced back in game two, scoring six runs in the second inning, winning by a score of 9-7 to split the double-header and secure a spot in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
The Sunday afternoon double-header was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed. Although the games were played in Glenville, the Falcons were listed as the home team and hit in the bottom half of the innings.
Four RBI singles in the third inning of game one gave Glenville State (14-36, 6-24 MEC) a 5-0 lead. Notre Dame (22-32, 10-22 MEC) did not score until the fifth inning, when senior
Erin Calhoun laced a one out RBI double to right field. Later in the inning, Calhoun scored when junior
Taylor Olson hit an RBI single.
Down 6-2, the Falcons came into the sixth inning looking to pounce on the Pioneers. Senior
Shelby Stephens doubled, sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont singled and junior
Ariel Linberger singled to score a run. Senior
Halli Swiger then singled to load the bases with no outs. However, Glenville State's Ally Brown worked hard to get out of the inning.
Stephens had two hits in game one, and now has over 200 career hits. She is one of four players in NDC history to record 200 hits. For GSC, both Brown and Karra Smith had three hits. Brown (7-12) got the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing three runs in seven innings.
The Pioneers fired the first shot in the first inning of game two with an RBI single. In the bottom of the second inning, NDC took the lead and continued to add to that advantage. Swiger began the inning with a double and after an error and a fielder's choice, freshman
Alexis Maciejowski singled to load the bases.
At that point, the wheels just about fell off for Glenville State. Back-to-back errors allowed two runs to score. Stephens then knocked a double to right field, clearing the bases and putting the Falcons up 5-1. Linberger capped the inning with an RBI single.
NDC scored their final three runs on Olson's single in the fourth inning and senior
Erin Calhoun's first home run of the season in the fifth.
Glenville State tried to get back into the game using power. Kelsey Naylor hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. And in the sixth inning, Cassidy Taylor put a grand slam over the left field fence, making the score 9-7.
Olson led the team with three hits. Stephens and Linberger each had two hits while Stephens and Calhoun, the three and four hitters, respectively, combined for five RBI. In the circle, Olson (11-16) earned the win.
The softball program has now advanced to the tournament in every season that they have been a member of the MEC.
The Falcons are the fourth seed in the North Division and will play West Virginia State University, the top seed in the South Division, on May 3. The first game of the double-elimination tournament will begin at noon and will be played at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia.
