Softball drops double-header to West Virginia Wesleyan

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In game one of the day, a couple of lead changes and 11 combined runs resulted in a close 6-5 win for West Virginia Wesleyan College. Notre Dame College recorded a double and a triple in game two, but fell by a score of 8-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

The back and forth play of game one began in the first inning. West Virginia Wesleyan scored two unearned runs with two outs in the first inning off of sophomore McKenzie Zigmont. The NDC offense helped out in the bottom of the first. Junior Alyssa Larson led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball before senior Shelby Stephens singled Larson home. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, junior Ariel Linberger knocked a single to right center field, giving Notre Dame a 3-2 lead.

The Falcons plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Rhianna Wheall double to right, scoring Stephens, who doubled to start the inning. Senior Halli Swiger later hit a sacrifice fly to give Notre Dame a 5-2 advantage.

WVWC began their comeback in the fourth inning. Lauryn King doubled to score two of the three runners on base. However, with one out, a suicide squeeze attempt failed when catcher Mikaela Fording picked up the bunt and tagged the runner coming home from third base, preserving the NDC lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, a pair of two-out RBI singles gave the Bobcats the lead for good.

For NDC, Stephens scored two runs and had two hits, including the double. Junior Taylor Olson came on to relieve Zigmont in the circle and pitched 2 1/3 innings, striking out four hitters.

Game two began with the Bobcats scoring a run on a wild pitch in the first. In the bottom of that inning, a leadoff walk came back to haunt West Virginia Wesleyan when Weall came around to score the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Stephens.

W.Va. Wesleyan then scored three runs in the third inning on two singles and a double. Zigmont tried to bring the Falcons back, grabbing an RBI on a sac fly in the third inning and then stroking a double to left center in the fifth inning, bringing Notre Dame within two runs, 5-3.

The Bobcats would pull away with two runs in the sixth inning and a run in the seventh.

Kennedy Cowart and Brooke Clark, each, had three hits for West Virginia Wesleyan. They also each had two RBI. For the Falcons, freshman Alexis Maciejowski went 2-for-4 and recorded her first career triple.

Notre Dame will stay home to play West Liberty University on April 26. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
