SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – A big fourth inning at the plate, plus solid pitching by sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont, gave Notre Dame College a 4-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit University in the first game of the day. In game two, NDC's comeback attempt was cut short and WJU won, 4-3.
On a soggy Friday afternoon, the start of the double-header was pushed back over two and a half hours because of rain. When the game started, neither team scored until the fourth inning, when Notre Dame had an improbable inning.
After two ground outs to start the frame, junior
Ariel Linberger walked. Seniors
Halli Swiger and
Erin Calhoun hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Freshman
Mikaela Fording then singled up the middle to plate the third run of the inning for Notre Dame.
One inning later, senior
Shelby Stephens recorded her second hit of the day, which was a triple to right center. The next hitter was Zigmont and she grounded out to shortstop, which scored Stephens and gave Notre Dame a 4-0 lead.
Zigmont (10-14) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out four batters.
In the second game, Wheeling Jesuit scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single. Later, the Cardinals had two runners on base and one out in the third inning. In that inning, a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed a run to score and then a second run scored on a sacrifice fly.
A leadoff double by WJU's Crystal Carrillo turned into a very important fourth run of the day for Wheeling Jesuit when she eventually scored.
The Falcons had two runs come home in the bottom of the fifth inning. Calhoun singled to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout. Freshman
Rhianna Weall, who had a career-high four hits, came through with an RBI double. Sophomore
Brenna Lorek singled to right field, scoring another run.
The bottom of the sixth inning was delayed about 20 minutes because of rain. Junior
Taylor Olson singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Calhoun singled, Fording grabbed another RBI when she stroked a single to left field. That hit also moved Calhoun to second base. NDC closed within a run, 4-3, but did not score another run.
For Notre Dame, Calhoun had two hits. Olson (9-16) threw seven innings in the circle, striking out six, but she took the loss.
Notre Dame will play West Liberty University, tomorrow, at 1 and 3 p.m. The Falcons will be celebrating Senior Day.
