The Falcons climb within three goals in second half, but fall to Shepherd

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In a game between two teams who were separated by one game in the Mountain East Conference standings, Notre Dame College hosted Shepherd University, on Sunday. Following a tough second half battle, where 18 total goals were scored, Shepherd won by a score of 18-11.

SU won the first five draw controls and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Falcons' first goal came with 22:02 remaining in the first half, as senior Taylor Henderson scored with an assist by freshman Danyelle Hardy.

The teams matched each other, goal for goal. Shepherd netted a shot to make the score 5-1. Hardy scored a goal with 18:29 to go, but then Shepherd scored twice. Freshman Katie Wendell netted another goal on a free position attempt, but SU scored the final goal of the half. The Rams led 8-3 after 30 minutes of play.

NDC closed in, scoring the first two goals of the second half. Henderson grabbed the first draw control and a minute later, Hardy scored with an assist by sophomore Bridie Schmalz. On the next defensive possession, the Falcons picked up the ball after a missed shot and went down the field. Sophomore Selena Carter scored with 26:38 to go in the game, closing the defect to three, 8-5.

Shepherd then scored two goals before Carter and Henderson put together a 2-0 run for the Falcons, which closed the gap to just three goals, again, 10-7. But Shepherd would go on an 8-4 run in the final 14 minutes, and the closest the Falcons would get was four goals.

For Notre Dame, Carter and Hardy led the team with three goals. Hardy also added two assists. Henderson, who was honored before the Senior Day game, scored twice and won four draw controls. Wendell, sophomore Abigail Plewes and sophomore Delaney Reardon combined for nine of the 18 Notre Dame caused turnovers. The Falcons turned the ball over just 12 times.

Shepherd had an advantage with 18 draw controls, six more than NDC. Lillian Funke led the Rams with eight goals on 12 shots on goal and won 11 draw controls. Mallory Davis put the ball in the net four times. Sidney Kelly scored two goals, but she dished out eight assists. Kelly assisted on five of Funke's eight goals.

The Falcons wrap up the home portion of their schedule with a matchup with Wheeling Jesuit University on April 18. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
