Falcons recover to take game four at FSU

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College baseball team split its second day of games at Fairmont State on Sunday to secure a win before coming home. The Falcons lost game one 10-3, but rebounded to win game two 7-1.

The Falcons got their offense going early as they scored three runs in the first two innings to go up 3-1, but from there NDC went on a scoring drought as Fairmont State mounted a comeback. The Fighting Falcons scored four runs in both the third and fourth inning to go up 9-3 before adding a final run in the six.

Scoring for Notre Dame early were Zach Santoro, Rick Phillips and Zarek Simkovich who were batted in by Joseph Paskell, Nick Farrell and Corey Miley, respectively. Simkovich had a strong day as a batter as he recorded three hits in three at bats in the first game. Santoro also recorded multiple hits in the third game of the series with two.

In game two, NDC saw a strong showing from starting pitcher Ty Shoaff who pitched a complete game to earn a win while allowing just one run. Shoaff struck out four batters and now leads the Falcons with 49 strikeouts in 2019. The junior transfer in his first year at NDC is one strikeout away from being the eighth player in Notre Dame history to wave 50 batters in a single season.

The Falcon offense also played well in the game, scoring seven runs. After trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Notre Dame scored six in the fifth while adding one more in the top of the seventh. Seven different players got a hit in game two while six different players rounded the bases with Phillips scoring twice. Bringing in those runners were Santoro and Farrell who combined for all five of the Falcons RBIs.

Santoro drove in two runs on a single before scoring himself on a bases-loaded triple from Farrell.

Notre Dame will play Mercyhurst on Tuesday, April 16, at 2 p.m. The contest at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio will be a single, nine-inning game.
