CLERMONT, Fla. – Notre Dame College puts the first run of the season on the board, but they cannot carry the momentum as they fall to University of Mary, 9-1, and Bloomfield College, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon.
To open the season, freshman
Alexis Maciejowski led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of sophomore
Katelyn Rheude. Maciejowski ran to third on a
Shelby Stephens groundout. The pitcher, junior
Taylor Olson, helped her cause by knocking in an RBI with a single. The Falcons would load the bases with two outs, but could not get another run across the plate.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning for UMary, tied the game at one. They would go onto score three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning.
NDC finished the game with four hits. Olson (0-1) took the loss after she allowed nine runs, six earned, over 4 2/3 innings.
For UMary, Kylie Alto and Mariah Sanchez each had two RBI. Brieann Backes (6-3) earned the win after going all five innings, allowing one run and striking out three hitters.
Game two was a pitcher's duel through four innings. Bloomfield had bases loaded in the top of the first with one out, but could not score. Notre Dame moved a runner to third in the third inning, but could not score.
Bloomfield broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning, with three runs. Their first hit in two innings came off the bat of Mya Lopez, as she and Arlene Flores hit back-to-back singles. With two outs in the innings, Brianna Johnson doubled to right field for one RBI. Taylor Galyean followed that up with a two-run double to give BC a 3-0 advantage.
The Falcons' junior
Alyssa Larson had the only hit of the game for NDC. Sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs over 6 1/3 innings in the pitcher's circle. She strike out six.
Galyean (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout for Bloomfield, striking out five. Four different players had two hits in the game.
Notre Dame plays twice on March 8, as they battle the University of Bridgeport and the University of Southern Indiana. The games will begin at 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
