CLERMONT, Fla. – As they continue the spring break trip, Notre Dame College played four different teams on Friday and Saturday. They defeated the University of Bridgeport and Slippery Rock University, but fell to the University of Southern Indiana and West Chester University.
On March 8, the Falcons grabbed a two-run lead in the fourth inning against Bridgeport. Senior
Shelby Stephens walked with one out and scored one batter later when junior
Taylor Olson knocked an RBI double to right field. Junior
Kathryn Smith then singled, putting runners on the corners. Later, with two outs, senior
Halli Swiger drove another run home on a single to left field.
The only run for UB came in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff walk became trouble after Allison Luzzi reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, before Samantha Sabor singled to left. One run scored and Luzzi was held up at third base. Sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont (1-2) then finished her complete game victory after getting a flyout to end the game. NDC secured the win by a score of 2-1.
The win was the first career victory for head coach
Kelsey Stopp. Zigmont only allowed four hits and struck out four and Olson had two hits for NDC.
In the pitcher's circle for Bridgeport, Ashley Eisnor (0-1) struck out three but was given the loss.
In the second game of the day, Southern Indiana scored three runs in the first inning on back-to-back-to-back hits. The Falcons responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, after Swiger had another RBI hit. Senior
Samantha Flowers then singled, scoring Swiger.
However, that would be as close as Notre Dame would get, as USI put two additional runs on the board and won 5-2.
Against West Chester, on Saturday, the Falcons fell in a tough 8-0 loss. In the second game of the day, against Slippery Rock, NDC had their first shutout of the season, behind the arm of Olson (1-2), who only gave up four hits and fanned 11 batters.
In the Slippery Rock contest, the top three batters in the lineup totaled four hits. The first run of the game, came in the fourth inning, as Stephens, who hits third in the order, knocked in a run with a single to left field. Notre Dame got an insurance run when freshman
Mikaela Fording hit the Falcons' first home run of the season, over the center field fence in the fifth inning. NDC, currently 2-4 on the season, won the game by a score of 2-0.
After a day off on Sunday, the Falcons will take on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and St. Thomas Aquinas College, on March 11.
