CLERMONT, Fla. – Notre Dame College closes out the Florida trip with two wins on Tuesday after falling twice on Monday. The Falcons put together a record of 4-6 in their first 10 games of the 2019 season.
In the first contest on March 11, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown beat NDC in a close 2-1 game. In game two, senior
Erin Calhoun led off with a walk, and came around to score the first run of the game. However, St. Thomas Aquinas College scored a run in the bottom of the first and second inning.
St. Thomas Aquinas would push the score to 5-1 between the fifth and sixth inning. NDC tried to put together a rally, scoring twice in the top of the seventh, but then stranded the go-ahead run on first base. The Falcons fell 5-3.
Notre Dame had a completely different day on March 12. Against Lake Erie College, the Falcons wasted no time with back-to-back doubles by Calhoun and freshman
Mikaela Fording to score a run. Later in the inning, junior
Kathryn Smith reached on an error to plate another run.
Five more runs crossed the plate in the second inning. NDC put together four consecutive hits with sophomore
Katelyn Rheude coming up with an RBI single and Calhoun hitting an RBI double. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Smith reached via error, sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont walked and senior
Shelby Stephens singled. The Falcons led 7-0 after two innings. They would score one more run in the fifth and won by a score of 8-0 against LEC.
For NDC, Calhoun and freshman Mikayla Fording each had two hits at the top of the order. The bottom four of the order each had one hit. Junior
Taylor Olson (2-2) grabbed the victory after allowing zero runs over four innings and struck out four.
In the second game of the day, Notre Dame, again, got off to a quick start against Nyack College. In the bottom of the first inning, Smith and Zigmont had RBI singles before Stephens blasted her first home run of the season, grabbing three RBI in the process.
Leading 5-0, Notre Dame loaded the bases in the third. Senior
Halli Swiger knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly before Rheude reached with a two out error, the second error of the inning, which allowed two to score. The Falcons won by a score of 8-0, again.
In the second contest, Calhoun had two more hits while Zigmont went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Stephens drove in three runs while going 2-for-2 at the plate. The winning pitcher was Zigmont (2-3) who went five scoreless innings, striking out two batters.
The Falcons will play at Wheeling Jesuit University on March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
