Notre Dame wins first MEC game of 2019

WHEELING, W.Va. – Riding a hot finish in Florida, the Notre Dame College softball team won its first Mountain East Conference game of the season 3-2 at Wheeling Jesuit. The Falcons fell, however, in game two 10-1.

In game one, the Cardinals struck the first blow with a solo home run in the first inning. But NDC fought back with two runs in the third and one in the sixth to go ahead.

Shelby Stephens scored two runners in the third inning with a single to center field. In the sixth it was Halli Swiger who singled through the left side to drive in Laina Combs and put the Falcons up 3-1. WJU scored one in the seventh, but could not complete a last-inning comeback.

Taylor Olson won the game in the circle, pitching all seven innings and striking out five batters in the process. Olson allowed just five hits and one walk.

In game two, Mikaela Fording drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie things up 1-1 in the top of the third, but Wheeling Jesuit responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs. The Cardinals continued their offensive outpour to win 10-1.

Fording led the Falcons on offense, reaching first base five times with four hits and a walk. The freshman hit two doubles, scored one run and brought in a run.

Stephens and Swiger each ended the day with two hits. Stephens recorded two RBIs while Swiger had one run and one RBI in the doubleheader.

Notre Dame will finish the weekend road swing tomorrow, March 17, at West Liberty. The games are scheduled to start at 1 and 3 p.m.
