WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – On Sunday, Notre Dame College dropped two games against West Liberty University, by scores of 8-2 and 6-1.
In game one, the Falcons got on the board in the top of the 2nd inning. Junior
Taylor Olson led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout. Sophomore
Katelyn Rheude doubled to left field, scoring Olson.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, WLU plated five runs on three NDC errors and a two-run double by Sydney Bennington. Kat Donzella hit a two run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and Katie Beeman doubled to bring in another run.
The Falcons' sophomore
McKenzie Zigmont hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, but that would be all for Notre Dame in the first game of the day.
The second game began with West Liberty plating two runs in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Bennington and Beeman. In the second inning, the Hilltoppers drove three more runs home on three RBI singles.
That would be all WLU would need as Notre Dame's only run came in the top of the second inning, when a double by freshman
Alexis Maciejowski doubled to left center field, scoring senior
Halli Swiger from first base.
The top offensive performers for NDC were Rheude and junior
Kathryn Smith. Rheude went 2-6 in the double-header, with an RBI and a double, while Smith had three hits in seven at bats. Zigmont struck out six batters in her start against West Liberty, which ties her season-high.
Bennington led the way at the plate for the Hilltoppers, with three hits, four RBI and two doubles. Both starting pitchers, Makenzie Amend (6-5) and Riley Bennington (3-3), earned wins for WLU.
Notre Dame will come home to play Ursuline College on March 19. The double-header will begin at 3 and 5 p.m.
