WHEELING, W.Va. – Notre Dame College tried to take down Wheeling Jesuit University, on Sunday, but the Cardinals stayed unbeaten in Mountain East Conference play with a 20-9 victory.
Notre Dame's first goal came with 16:50 to go in the first half by senior
Taylor Henderson, after Wheeling Jesuit (7-3, 3-0 MEC) took a 7-0 lead.
The Falcons (4-6, 1-2 MEC) would score three goals in a row, but Wheeling responded with a 3-0 run, pulling ahead 10-3. NDC scored three of the final five goals of the half and trailed 12-6 at halftime as Henderson had three goals and freshman
Leslie Diaz added two for Notre Dame.
Wheeling Jesuit scored four times in the first five minutes of the second half. With 10:24 remaining in the game, WJU led 19-8, and then each team scored just one goal the rest of the way, as freshman
Danyelle Hardy scored her second goal of the half with 1:29 left.
Henderson finished with three goals while Diaz and Hardy both had two goals. Diaz, sophomores
Alexas Barone and
Bridie Schmalz and freshmen
Katie Wendell all caused two turnovers.
For Wheeling Jesuit, Hayley Holmquist recorded six goals. Mackenzie Kaderabek and Paige Orbell each had four goals. Ally Coggins (three goals) and Megan Mangia (one goal) combined for eight of the team's 10 assists.
Notre Dame will battle Cleary University, next, on the road. The game is scheduled for April 3 at 4 p.m.
