Game Recap: Baseball |

Two close games put NDC back on track

AVON, Ohio - The Notre Dame College baseball team swept Glenville State in Friday afternoon's doubleheaders, improving the team's record to 10-15, 4-6 MEC. Both games were one-run decisions that the Falcons came out on top in after trailing.

In game one, most of the offensive action was packed into the third inning as all three of the game's runs were scored. Glenville State was on the board first with a single run scored by the designated hitter Tyler Phillips. But Notre Dame would score two runs in the bottom of the inning after an error by the Pioneers, giving NDC a 2-1 lead that would hold through to the final.

Tyler Gault earned the complete-game win for the Falcons as he struck out seven batters and allowed just one run.

There was a bit more back and forth in game two, but again the scoring was done early. The Falcons scored one run in each the first and second innings to go up 2-0 before Glenville State would score three in the top of the fourth to gain its own 3-2 lead. Again, though, Notre Dame responded, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 4-3. The final three innings were scoreless as NDC kept its lead and earned the sweep.

Kenny Pierson earned the victory in the second game, striking out five batters in five innings. Pierson was not credited with any earned runs. Todd Marshall recorded his second save of the season after pitching relief in the final two innings. Marshall did not allow a hit and only walked one batter while striking out two.

The majority of game two's scoring was done by leadoff hitter Lukas Thompson, who was driven in three times throughout the contest. Zach Santoro had two RBIs that scored Thompson while Corey Miley had one. Santoro scored the team's other run after Joseph Paskell hit him in.

Thompson's ability to score in the doubleheaders (he also scored once in game one), is due to his base-running skills. The sophomore stole three bases on the day moving his season total up to nine. With three hits, he also pulled his season batting average up to .304.

Following Thompson in the lineup, Miley and Santoro also had successful days at the plate with a combined seven hits. Miley recorded two hits in each game, which he has now done in three of his four starts after earning a spot in the lineup last weekend. Santoro recorded two RBIs on three hits and has also recorded multiple hits in three of the last four games.

Notre Dame will play West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 31. The games at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio are scheduled to begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
