URBANA, Ohio – Notre Dame College led nearly the entire game on the road against Urbana University, but a 15-6 run over a six minute span in the second half pushed the Falcons advantage to 22 points, and led to a 89-70 win, on Saturday afternoon.
In the first four minutes of the game, Notre Dame and Urbana combined for seven lead changes. The Blue Knights (6-20, 4-18 MEC) started 4-for-5 from the field and led by a score of 8-7, with 17:38 remaining in the first half. Nick Detlev started for Urbana, and standing at 7'3", he created a few problems for the Falcons early in the game.
"He (Detlev) gives them serious length," head coach
Tim Koenig said. "He altered shots and we had to get him on the move. He's good around the basket, offensively."
Redshirt-senior
Will Vorhees then split a pair of free throws and junior
Larenz Thurman stole the ball and hit a layup on the other end, which gave the Falcons (20-8, 16-6 MEC) a 10-8 advantage, and they did not give the lead back for the rest of the contest.
The first double-digit lead for either team came with 8:21 remaining in the first stanza, in favor of NDC. Between the 10:02-mark and 8:21-mark on the clock, Thurman and redshirt-junior
Drew Scarberry each hit a three pointer and Vorhees hit two free throws to give NDC a 28-18 lead. Midway through the half, the Falcons were still shooting nearly 60-percent from the floor.
Urbana did not fade away and crept within single digits for much of the final eight minutes of the half. With 37-seconds remaining, freshman
Isaiah Sanders found Vorhees with a quick dump off pass in the paint for a dunk, which put NDC on top 41-30 at the halftime break.
"Defensively, we could have played better in the first half and we were lucky to have the lead going into halftime," said Koenig. "We made halftime adjustments on defense. Offensively, they didn't do anything different against us, so we didn't have to make many adjustments."
Both Vorhees (17) and Thurman (12) scored in double-digits for Notre Dame in the first half, but Urbana shot the ball better, at 45-percent, throughout the initial 20 minutes.
Notre Dame's adjustments began to work early in the second half, as they put together a 7-2 run to push their lead to 16 points, 48-32. The Falcons hit their first three shots.
The big run came with 14:12 remaining, after Matt Treacy hit a three pointer to cut the Blue Knights deficit to 12 points, 57-45. Vorhees was fouled by Treacy, on the other end of the court, resulting in two made free throws. That was the beginning of a 15-6 run, in which Vorhees recorded seven points and one assist and NDC took a 22 point lead, 73-51.
Koenig gave the keys to the big second half run.
"Good execution and making shots," he mentioned. "We made stops, had run outs and it led to easy buckets. We played through Will and Larenz as the distributors and everyone did well around them."
The largest the lead would get for Notre Dame was 23 points at the 6:09-mark in the second stanza. NDC won by 19, 89-70. Vorhees went off for 21 points in the second half, on 73-percent shooting. He finished the game with 38 points, on 54-percent shooting, 12 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. He has now scored over 30 points in 10 consecutive games.
Thurman gave the Falcons 18 points, on 54-percent shooting, and three steals. Sanders added 11 points while junior
Bruce Hodges III had nine points, eight rebounds and two steals. Notre Dame shot 49-percent.
For Urbana, Malik Jacobs led Urbana with 22 points and nine rebounds and Mike Ryan added 14 points, on 75-percent shooting, off the bench. Datrey Long (13) and Jordan Bradley (11) also scored in double-digits.
Notre Dame ends the regular season winning seven of their final 10 games and for the first time in program history, the Falcons have won 20 regular season contests.
The Falcons have locked up the third seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. Their first game will be Friday, March 8, when they battle West Virginia State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.
