Falcons drop doubleheader against Charleston

AVON, Ohio – The Notre Dame College baseball team fell in two games to Charleston on Sunday afternoon by scores of 6-5 and 4-0. The Falcons nearly came back in the first game with a strong seventh inning, but could not close the gap completely.

NDC started the day off strong with a run in the second inning of game one to go up 1-0. Matt Richards drove in Nick Farrell to be the first on the scoreboard. Charleston then scored three runs in the third inning, but Notre Dame came back to tie things up after Naja Garica drove in a run in the fourth and Zach Santoro scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles followed up NDC's pair of runs with three runs in the sixth and seventh inning to go up 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, and final, inning, Rick Phillips hit a sacrifice fly and Santoro scored on an error to get the game within one, but Charleston escaped with a one-run win.

The first three in the lineup: Lukas Thompson, Santoro and Phillips each had two hits in the first game, but it was Farrell in the six-spot who led the team with three hits. Farrell and Santoro each scored two runs while Thompson scored one.

Ty Shoaff threw a complete game, striking out eight batters and allowing just three earned runs.

In game two, Jack Brunetti had the Falcons pinned down offensively as UC's starting pitcher. Brunetti threw all seven innings and allowed just four hits. Two of those hits came from Joseph Paskell, who started at first base in game two.

Paskell has had a great start to the 2019 season. Playing both at first base and as the team's designated hitter, Paskell now has a season batting average of .400.

Notre Dame will compete next at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. The Falcons and Cavaliers are scheduled to play their doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
