NDC falls to UVa-Wise in close contest

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College puts together a late run to pull within one point with 10-seconds remaining on Senior Night, but the University of Virginia's College at Wise takes home the win, 92-87, on Saturday evening.

The Falcons (19-7, 15-5 MEC) got the ball to redshirt-senior Will Vorhees early and often in the first half, as he scored eight of his team's first 10 points and 10 of their first 15. The Falcons held their largest lead of the first half, 15-12, after Vorhees knocked down two free throws with 12:49 to go before halftime.

The score would stay in favor of NDC, until a quick 4-0 run, capped by a jumper by Jordan Pointer, gave UVa-Wise (9-17, 6-14 MEC) a 21-20 advantage. However, on the next NDC possession, freshman Isaiah Sanders hit a layup, which put the Falcons back on top by one.

For the third lead change in 35 seconds, the Cavaliers' Chance Sheffey hit a three pointer, giving his team a 24-22 lead. UVa-Wise did not relinquish the lead for the final nine minutes of the first half.

UVa-Wise increased their lead to seven points with 2:21 to go, but Vorhees went on his own 5-0 run to pull the Falcons within two points, 42-40, at the first half buzzer. For the Cavaliers, Sheffey scored 13 points, while Cameron Whiteside scored 11 in the first 20 minutes. Vorhees added 21 points for Notre Dame.

The Falcons looked very solid to begin the second stanza. Sanders sunk a jumper to tie the game and then stole the ball, making a layup on the other end. With 14:46 to go in the game, Briggs Parris scored for UVa-Wise, to close their deficit to two points and NDC took a timeout.

After the break in action, Vorhees made a layup, junior Bruce Hodges III stole the ball and was fouled. He split the free throws, but after missing the second, Hodges grabbed the rebound and laid the ball in the hoop. That gave Notre Dame their largest lead of the game, 57-50, with 14:15 remaining.

While the momentum was the side of the Falcons, a 7-0 run by the Cavaliers, including five points by Whiteside, tied the game at 57.

With 10:16 to go, Michal Seals connected on a jumper to put UVa-Wise ahead, 60-59. Although the Cavaliers' lead would never extend into double-digits, Notre Dame never could grab the lead, again. Parris came up big for UVa-Wise in the final five and-a-half minutes of the game. In that time, he knocked down four threes.

Notre Dame's redshirt-junior Drew Scarberry nearly put together a heroic comeback in the final minute. Down seven points, Scarberry hit a three and was fouled by Parris. He made his free throw to pull within three points. On Notre Dame's next possession, down by four, Scarberry knocked down a contested three pointer with 27-seconds left. The score would be a one point difference, again, with 10-seconds left, when Vorhees grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup. Yet, that would be as close as the Falcons would get.

"The result wasn't what we wanted, but it doesn't take away from the commitment and the quality of people that Daniel Atcheson, Angelo Cugini and Will Vorhees are," head coach Tim Koenig said. "They are instrumental to our program. Dan has been with us for four years and has really contributed. Sometimes not in tangible results, but in practice and in intangible things. Angelo transferred in here. He was hurt this year, but always gives us everything he has, he's brought great leadership. He is extremely committed and has done a nice job for us. And Will, obviously, is the best player in the history of the program and a leader on and off the court and I can't say enough good things about him. I know they are disappointed in the outcome, but I know we're going to bounce back. We're going to learn from it. I'm grateful that we're going to have the opportunity to practice on Monday and Tuesday and play on Wednesday, because I think this team still has a lot left in the tank."

Vorhees finished the game with 37 points, on 62-percent shooting. He has now scored over 30 points in eight consecutive games. Vorhees totaled nine rebounds and three blocks. Before the game, it was announced that Vorhees' number 41 would be retired after the season. Scarberry added 21 points off the bench on six three pointers and three free throws. He now has five game with five, or more, made threes, this season. Sanders had 13 points. Hodges added 11 points and 10 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

UVa-Wise shot 52-percent from the field, including 57-percent in the second half. The Cavaliers had 42 points in the paint. Four of their five starters scored in double-digits. Briggs Parris led the way with 21 points while Whiteside gave UVa-Wise 20 points and seven rebounds.

Notre Dame will travel to No. 7 West Liberty University to play on February 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
