GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Notre Dame College put together big runs in both halves and had help from
Will Vorhees' 44 points in order to combat a tough effort from Glenville State College and pull out the road win by a score of 106-98, on Thursday night.
Glenville State's first three made baskets were three pointers. Kalin Johnson made two and Elisha Mayberry had one. Notre Dame (17-6, 13-4 MEC) tied the game at six, but GSC used the three ball to stay ahead of the Falcons. The Pioneers (9-14, 4-13 MEC) knocked down seven three pointers in the first 10 minutes of action.
Notre Dame fell down by nine points at the 9:06-mark in the first half and again at the 6:46-mark. At that point, the Falcons started to turn the tide.
NDC made the next three shots to go on a 7-0 run and get within two points. A bit later, following a layup by Noah Frampton to put Glenville State up 47-42 with just under four minutes before halftime, junior
Larenz Thurman got a major Notre Dame run started.
The native of Wilmington, Delaware pulled up in traffic and knocked down a three. And after a miss by the Pioneers, Thurman got the ball on the next NDC possession and drove to the hoop for a layup.
From the 3:41-mark until halftime, Notre Dame went on a 17-4 run and took a 59-51 lead into halftime. During the run, Thurman scored or assisted on 13 of the points.
"Larenz led it (the run)," said head coach
Tim Koenig. "And we played better defense to end the half.
Daniel Lott,
Hamish Warden,
Isaiah Sanders, our guys off the bench came in and helped us on defense."
Another player who kept the Falcons in the game throughout the half was redshirt-senior
Will Vorhees. He put the first seven points on the scoreboard for NDC and finished the half with 24 points, on 10-of-12 shooting, and eight rebounds. As a team, the Falcons shot nearly 60-percent in the first stanza.
The momentum swung the other way as the second half began and the Pioneers put together a run. Glenville State, who shot 53-percent from three point range in the first half, immediately knocked down back-to-back threes. A 17-8 run put GSC in front, 68-67, with 14:57 to go.
With 11:15 remaining in the contest, a layup and a foul turned into a three point play for the Pioneers' Phil Bledsoe, who tied the game at 77. But that would be the last time the Pioneers would tie the game. Junior
Bruce Hodges III found freshman
Hamish Warden on back-to-back possessions for layups to give Notre Dame a quick four point advantage.
Vorhees began his takeover, scoring eight of Notre Dame's next 13 points. Later, he expanded the NDC lead to 13, 103-90, with a jumper at the 1:20-mark. And then he put the exclamation point on the game with a rebound on one end and a two-handed slam on the other, with 12-seconds remaining.
"Our shot selection was good in the second half," Koenig mentioned. "Will and Larenz had the ball in their hands most of the time, which opened up shots for other guys. We need to be better on defense, we allowed too many threes. But give Glenville credit for making shots."
Vorhees had 20 points in the second half and finished the night with a season-high 44. The NDC big man has scored over 30 points in seven of his last 10 games. Tonight he shot 73-percent and also grabbed 15 rebounds. Thurman added 25 points and six assists. Freshman
Isaiah Sanders and Warden combined for 21 points off the bench on 8-of-13 (62-percent) shooting. The Falcons shot 56-percent and had 58 points in the paint. They also won the rebounding battle, 45-29.
"We pounded the offensive glass pretty hard and didn't settle for guarded shots," Koenig stated. "When you allow that many threes, you have to play well offensively."
Glenville State hit nine three pointers in the first half and had 14 threes on the night, the most that the Falcons have given up in a game since January 19. All five Pioneer starters scored in double-digits. Mayberry led the way with 23 points, on 57-percent shooting, and he connected on five three pointers. Jamal Pollydore added 21 points, 15 in the second half, and eight assists.
The Falcons will travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. to take on West Virginia Wesleyan College on February 16. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 4 p.m.
