ATHENS, W.Va. – In their final road game of the regular season, Notre Dame College earned their 11th win of 2019 and seventh shutout of the campaign, with a 2-0 victory over Concord University, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons' fourth shot of the game was successful. In the 17th minute, the opportunity was set up with an NDC corner kick that went into the box, then was cleared for a few seconds before NDC regained control. Junior
Varis Singh Khera, who was just outside of the box on the left side, lifted a pass toward the goal. Junior
Javier Mate shot immediately after receiving the pass and the ball touched the net, giving Notre Dame an early lead that they would take into halftime.
In the first half, Notre Dame outshot Concord 6-2, but had just one more shot on goal (3-2).
To begin the second half, the Falcons had taken two shots in the first five minutes, with senior
Giulio Bellei's shot going high and another shot by Mate trailing off to the right. Sophomore
Nicholas Felician took three shots on goal over a 12 minute span, from the 56th minute to the 68th minute, but could not convert, as Concord goalkeeper Kyle Brown made the stops.
In the 84th minute, freshman
Ned Dry took a shot that was saved, but the Falcons regrouped and about 40 seconds later, sophomore
Arthur Moraes found senior
Arthur Favero who gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The goal was Favero's fourth of the season and first since his three goal performance on October 6.
The NDC defense was stifling in the second half, allowing Concord to take just one shot in the final 45 minutes. On the offensive end, Notre Dame took nine shots, including five on goal in the second half. They finished the game with 15 shots taken.
"I thought we played a good 90 minutes today," head coach
Carl Nolan mentioned. "We maintained a good tempo and kept pressure on Concord. It's hard to create against a deep and low block, but we did it time and time again. It was pleasing to see."
Brown recorded six saves for Concord, while senior
Daniele De Angelis had two for the Falcons.
With the win today, the Falcons have won at least five road contests in five out of the last seven seasons.
Notre Dame ends the regular season with a home game against Urbana University, on November 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
