Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Men's soccer defeats Urbana, secures No. 2 seed in MEC tournament

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Taking the lead in the first 10 minutes of a game is usually a recipe for success, and it was for Notre Dame College, who locked up the No. 2 seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Urbana University, on Sunday. The Falcons finished the regular season with 12 conference wins, which is the most wins for the program since joining the MEC in 2013.

The Falcons' top goal scorer this season, junior Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin, increased his season total to 11 with a goal in the sixth minute. Sophomore Nicholas Felician was credited with the assist after he worked around a defender in the box, saw Bohlin running behind with a better angle at the goal and set him up with a precise pass. Bohlin now has four game-winning goals, which also leads the team.

About ten minutes later, the Falcons were breathing down the neck of Urbana's goalkeeper Jakob Henriksen. Felician and junior Varis Singh Khera were sprinting down the field with one Urbana defender and Henriksen separating them from the goal. Felician's shot in the 16th minute was saved by Henriksen but the ball rolled away. Before the Blue Knights could clear it, Khera ran by and scored the Falcons second goal of the day.

Over the first 45 minutes of action, the Falcons outshot Urbana, 5-2. The Blue Knights took just one shot on goal.

The Notre Dame defense stood strong in the second half and UU did not take a shot in the first 28 minutes of the half. The Blue Knights took just two shots in the second stanza and ended the day with four.

On the other side, NDC only took four shots in the final 45 minutes, with freshman Magnus Abels taking two of them, including a shot on goal.

"Today's game was always going to be a game that would be won with physicality and discipline," said head coach Carl Nolan. "I was very pleased with how the team started and finished the game. Once again it was a great team win. We are excited to be in the semi-finals of the tournament."

With his two assists on the day, Felician is now tied for the team lead with four assists on the year. Both goalkeepers, Henriksen and NDC's Daniele De Angelis, recorded two saves. De Angelis, and the NDC defense, has recorded eight shutouts this year.

NDC has now won, at least, 12 regular season games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The Falcons currently have a 7-0-1 record at home, marking the first time since 2013 that the program went an entire regular season without losing a home game.

Notre Dame, winners of five straight games, will host the No. 3 seed, West Virginia Wesleyan College, on November 13. The Bobcats, currently on a three-game winning streak, hopped Urbana in the conference standings on the last day of the regular season. The Falcons and Bobcats are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
