Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Men's soccer uses big first half to beat Wheeling

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – To begin the final week of the regular season, Notre Dame College put three goals on the scoreboard in the first half, leading to a 3-1 victory over Wheeling University, on Monday afternoon. The game was a makeup of a contest postponed on September 11.

Notre Dame came out with an aggressiveness that lasted throughout the contest. To begin NDC's first scoring play, senior Giulio Bellei cleared the ball from Notre Dame's side of the field. The strong kick turned out to be a decent pass to sophomore Nicholas Felician who had snuck behind the defense. Felician was trying to gather the ball when he was tripped by WU's goalkeeper, Josh Zimmerman, who dove and stuck out his hand, tripping Felician. Zimmerman was given a yellow card and then junior Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin hit the penalty kick in the 14th minute.

Nearly 20 minutes later, the Falcons' defense stole the ball as Wheeling was threatening to enter the box. The ball was pushed forward to junior Varis Singh Khera who passed to Felician, running with him right side of the field. A perfectly placed pass back to Khera on the run, made for a chance at goal, which Khera converted for his fourth of the season, in the 34th minute.

Just minutes after their second goal, NDC struck again. Freshman Magnus Abels went after a ball that was lifted high into the air. He jumped, trying to head the ball, but was undercut by a Wheeling defender and hit the ground. The play happened in the box, resulting in another penalty kick. Bohlin scored on his second penalty kick of the day and fifth of the season.

The Falcons took eight shots in the first half to Wheeling's one and led, 3-0.

There were several times in the second half when Notre Dame looked poised to score a fourth goal. One major point in the game came in the 58th minute. Felician was running toward Zimmerman in goal and took a shot that bounced off the keeper and back to Felician who shot again, but Zimmerman saved it again. Thirty seconds later, Khera took a shot on goal, followed by a shot by Bohlin, which went over the crossbar.

The Falcons made Zimmerman put in a full day's work as the goalkeeper, taking nine shots on goal in the second half. He saved all of them and finished the day with 12 saves.

Wheeling's first and only goal came in the 68th minute. A shot by Gaizka Redondo hit the post and was cleared by Notre Dame's defense. Bryce Porter threw the ball into the box where Senan Gilcreest gathered the pass around a flock of defenders before turning and stunning NDC goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis with a shot that sank into the net.

"We executed our game plan in the first half. It was pleasing to see," said head coach Carl Nolan. "In the second half, we lost our way a little bit and were wasteful at times. It is a good solid three points that we are very happy with."

The Falcons took 21 shots, which is the third highest amount in a game this season. Their 15 shots on goal is tied for the most this season. They held Wheeling to seven shots. Khera's game winning goal is his third of the season, tying him with Bohlin for the most on NDC. Bohlin's two goals give him 10 on the season.

NDC will now travel to play Concord University on Wednesday, November 6. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
