CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame College posted their fourth highest hit percentage of the season, at .307, against the Univeristy of Charleston. The Falcons would win the match 3-1, allowing an average of 16.7 points per set in their three set wins.
Charleston scored the first point in the opening set, but then Notre Dame took over. The Falcons pulled ahead and did not allow Charleston to retake the lead. At one point, NDC pushed their lead to five points, 16-11. But the Golden Eagles hung around and after falling down by five, a 10-5 run tied the set at 21. However, the NDC offense put any doubts to bed with four kills and a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-22. Senior
Mary Kate McHugh had five kills in the first set.
A 5-0 run set the tone for the Falcons in the second set, taking a 6-1 lead over Charleston. During the barrage, senior
Alexandra Kaeberlein had two aces. She would finish the day with four aces which ties her season-high and is third most in a four-set match at Notre Dame. There would be no comeback in store for UC in the second set, with NDC winning 25-17. NDC hit for a .379 percentage, committing just four attack errors in 29 attempts.
In the third set, NDC jumped out to an 8-3 lead and even led by five points later on, 14-9. A 7-1 run put the lead back into the hands of the Golden Eagles. Notre Dame would take the lead one last time, before Charleston put the finishing touch on the comeback, scoring eight of the final 11 points in the set to win, 25-21. The third set was the only one that saw the Falcons have hit percentage lower than .282.
Notre Dame came out on fire in the fourth set, putting the first five points on the board and then grabbing an 8-2 lead. NDC dominated in the second half of the set to seal the victory with a score of 25-11. McHugh had six kills in the set and the team held a hit percentage of .533, committing just one error in 30 attack attempts. On the other side, Charleston hit at a -0.091 clip, with eight attack errors.
The win marks Notre Dame's first against the University of Charleston. The Falcons had been 0-7 in program history against the Golden Eagles, since 2013.
McHugh finished with 20 kills, making her the first player in program history with 1,500 career kills. She now has 1,512 in her career. Senior
Natalie Spadaro equaled her season-high in kills, with 10, the same number she had on the opening night of the season. McHugh had a hit percentage of .364 and Spadaro was at .438. Senior
Paige Staudacher ended the game with 49 assists, which is tied for eighth all time at NDC for a four-set match. The team's 57 assists is tied for second in NDC history in a four-set match.
On the defensive side,
Alexandra Kaeberlein led the team with 21 digs, while sophomore
Amelia Kaeberlein had 10. The Falcons finished with 64 digs. McHugh and sophomore
Katie Richardson were tied for the team lead with four blocks.
NDC will take on West Liberty University, at home, on November 5. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
