WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Although Notre Dame College had five players score in double-digits, the Falcons fell to No. 14 West Liberty University, on Tuesday, by a score of 96-70.
After Notre Dame faced an early deficit, sophomore
Levi Frankland's big first half jump started the Falcons offense a couple of times. With NDC trailing 7-1, Frankland hit two three pointers and freshman
Jordan Burton hit another as the Falcons went on a 9-2 run over two minutes to grab a 10-9 lead.
West Liberty then put the next seven points on the board to take a 16-10 lead. Once again, Frankland stepped up. He went on an 8-2 run, by himself, hitting two more threes and a layup, which tied the game at 18, with 12:26 remaining in the first half.
The Hilltoppers took a timeout and regrouped. The team that averages over 11 made three pointers each game, hit a three pointer following the break in the action. That started a 13-4 run, which put West Liberty on top by nine points, 31-22.
The lead was cut down to six points, following a layup by senior
Bruce Hodges III with 6:55 to go, but WLU went on another big run and led, 50-34, at the halftime break.
As the teams went to their locker rooms, Frankland led all scorers with 16 points. He shot 50-percent from the floor and 57-percent from three point range. However, the Falcons only shot 39-percent, as a team, over the first 20 minutes. On the other side, West Liberty shot 21-for-33 (64-percent) and won the rebounding battle, 28-10.
Junior
Dae John Walker-Bey scored very quickly to start the second half, off a pass from Frankland, and NDC trailed by just 14 points, 50-36.
Later, Notre Dame would cut the lead to 12 points. As late as the 15:43-mark, Walker-Bey scored on a layup that made the score 58-46. But, NDC would not be able to get any closer.
The Falcons did score the final four points of the game, but West Liberty won, 96-70.
Frankland was held to two points in the second half and finished with 18. The Falcons did shoot 45-percent from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 42-percent. Five players scored in double-figures for NDC, as Burton, Hodges and seniors
Daniel Lott and
Larenz Thurman each had 11 points. Burton made five of the six shots he took and Lott also grabbed nine rebounds.
For West Liberty, Will Yoakum scored 19 points on 80-percent shooting and was 3-for-3 from long range. Marlon Moore Jr. had 10 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks. The Hilltoppers had 48 rebounds and shot 59-percent.
The Falcons did hold WLU under their average of 112.4 points per game and 11.6 three pointers made per game. The Hilltoppers made just seven threes in the contest.
Notre Dame comes back home to play Glenville State University on December 4. Tip-off is scheduled to 7:30 p.m.
