WHEELING, W.Va. - Despite another strong start for the Notre Dame College women's soccer team, where the Falcons were able to apply pressure, and out-shoot their opponents 11-3, the score sat at 0-0 at halftime. NDC came out strong in the second half and quickly changed the standstill to win 3-1 at Wheeling, with the teams scoring four goals in the second half.
Just 33 seconds into the second half,
Ellie Gess scored after Notre Dame was able to take control of the ball despite the Cardinals starting with possession. A three-pronged attack by the Falcons, consisting of Gess,
Katja Josipovic and
Kazarie Kephart, took the ball down field to break through the WU defense. Josipovic assisted the goal after the three players juggled things around the Cardinals.Â
Less than 10 minutes later, NDC was able to score again. This time from a free kick taken by senior midfielder
Lauren Chaney, who shot from 45 yards out. Wheeling would score in the 70th minute, but would be able to keep things close for long as
Alyssa Soltis scored the final goal of the game in the 86th minute.Â
"It was great to see us capitalize on all the chances we created," said head coach
Mike Shiels. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum into our next game and throughout the season."
Jordan Pasalaqua earned her first career win at Notre Dame in her third start. She improved to 1-1-1 on the season.Â
The Falcons earned three points in the conference standings to bring their total to nine on the year. NDC is now tied with Frostburg State for third in the MEC North. The top three teams from each division make the conference tournament.Â
Notre Dame will play at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, October 13, to try and move up in the standings again. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.Â
