SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Senior
Arthur Favero secured a hat trick and senior
Daniele De Angelis became the program leader in goalkeeper wins on Sunday, as Notre Dame College defeated West Liberty University, 7-0.
After finishing in a draw with Urbana University, Notre Dame's offense was looking to put the ball in the net early and often. They did that against West Liberty, beginning with a barrage of goals over a six-minute span in the first half.
The scoring started in the 21st minute when junior
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin stole the ball after an arrant pass by a WLU defender went his way. Bohlin set himself and shot the ball into the goal. Bohlin has now scored a goal in each of the last four games and he has now scored the game-winner in two out of the last three matches.
In the 25th minute, senior
Giulio Bellei took possession of a ball that was lifted high in the air by a West Liberty defender. Bellei used a strong kick from about 25 yards away to put the Falcons up, 2-0. About a minute and a half later,
Evans Armah sent a pass on a line into the box to Favero, who scored from the left side of the goal. That represented Favero's first goal of 2019.
Notre Dame out-shot WLU, 11-1 in the first 45 minutes.
NDC was still very aggressive in the second half and they would take 15 additional shots in the final 45 minutes. Notre Dame went up 4-0 on a quick pass from senior
David Torralba in the box to Favero, who used a quick toe tap to spin the ball into the net. In the 62nd minute, freshman
Jordan Lewis stole the ball as WLU tried to attack. Lewis passed up the field to Favero who sent a perfectly placed pass to Bellei. Bellei converted the goal.
As the game went on, Notre Dame made multiple substitutions. In all, 22 players saw time on the pitch for the Falcons. Freshman
Magnus Abels came off the bench and was a major factory, beginning in the 69th minute when he assisted on Favero's third goal of the day. Then, 10 minutes later, Abels scored his first career goal on an assist by freshman
Mitchell Carlton, who recorded his first career assist. That goal put Notre Dame ahead, 7-0.
"Our final third play today was very good," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "It was nice to see the players connect with each other and build a convincing win."
The Falcons out-shot WLU, 26-3, and had 15 shots on goal to the Hilltoppers' one. Notre Dame totaled season highs in points (20), goals (7) and assists (6).
NDC's seven goals are the most that the Falcons have scored since September 23, 2014 when Notre Dame won 8-0 against the University of Findlay. It is also the most goals the program has scored against a Mountain East Conference opponent.
Daniele De Angelis already had the program record for career shutouts and saves in NDC history, and he now has 39 career wins in goal, which passes
Alex Klein for the top spot. He recorded one save today.
Notre Dame has a week off and will not play until October 13, when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan College. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
