Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Men's soccer falls in overtime

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – A battle between two teams with one conference loss took place on Sunday between Notre Dame College and West Virginia Wesleyan College. For the second time in their last three games the Falcons went to overtime, but on Sunday, WVWC came away with a 1-0 victory.

A defensive battle seemed inevitable as both teams allow around one goal per game, on average. In the first half, that held true.

Notre Dame's first few shots were heavily altered by the Bobcats' defense that tightened up around the goal. Junior Javier Mate and senior Arthur Favero both took a shot in the first 11 minutes that were wide of the goal.

West Virginia Wesleyan, had the first shot on goal of the game in the 35th minute. Joshua Tenney got into the box and shot the ball that went over a sliding defender before senior Daniele De Angelis made a diving save. The Falcons' goalkeeper finished the game with three saves.

Later in the half, with three minutes to go, a free kick by Javier De Ona Garcia of WVWC went just above the crossbar.

Both teams took three shots in the initial 45 minutes.

NDC was aggressive early in second half. Between 55th to 57th minute, junior Varis Singh Khera took a shot wide right and Favero had a shot that trailed off to the left.

West Virginia Wesleyan threatened in the 47th minute, as a corner kick lifted the ball to the opposite side of the field. The ball then went into the air and De Ona Garcia got a shot off, which was saved.

With 10 minutes remaining, NDC had a chance in the box, but the Bobcats defense closed in, sent a clear backwards and forced a long shot by junior Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin. Then, in the 96th minute, Bohlin worked around a defender and shot a line drive that sailed close to the crossbar. Notre Dame took six shots in the second half.

Notre Dame out-shot WVWC 3-0 in the first overtime period, including one by Favero that hit the post.

The golden goal came in the 103rd minute for the Bobcats. Just outside the top of the box, Luca Falconieri passed to Nika Monaselidze on the run, toward the goal. The shot by Monaselidze fooled De Angelis and rolled into the right side of the net.

For the first time this season, Notre Dame was held without a shot on goal.

Next on the schedule for the Falcons is Davis & Elkins College, at home, on October 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
