SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College grabbed a lead nine minutes into the game and secured a season sweep of Davis & Elkins College with a 2-0 win, on Thursday afternoon. Back on September 8, the Falcons also took down the Senators with a 2-0 result.
The game had just reached the ninth minute, when senior
Arthur Favero was taking his second corner kick of the game. After Favero's corner, the ball ricocheted off a defender and found junior
Javier Mate open on the left side. Mate headed the ball into the goal with ease. That goal was Mate's first of the season and turned out to be the game-winner.
Another corner kick by Favero, about seven later, gave way to another header shot. This time sophomore
Alexandru Rumleanschi went high with his attempt.
Davis & Elkins had their chances to tie the game, taking five shots between the 19th minute and the 33rd minute. However, only one of those was a shot on goal.
After 45 minutes of play, D&E was outshooting Notre Dame, 6-4.
Within the first two minutes of the second half, both teams had taken a shot that went wide.
The Falcons took six shots and six corner kicks in the second stanza and looked poised to add to their lead. In the span of three minutes, senior
Giulio Bellei had a shot hit the post, Favero went high with a chance at goal and Bellei's second shot went wide.
At the 68th minute mark, in 40 seconds of game time, junior
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin had three corner kicks, but none produced a goal. Then, in the 73rd minute, the Falcons struck. Bohlin used a free kick to pass the ball into the box, where senior
Paolo Termine had snuck behind the defense. Termine headed the ball into the net for his first goal of the campaign, giving the Falcons an insurance goal.
"We are really pleased with the three points [awarded with the win] today," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "We scored goals from two set pieces which is important, and something that we work on in training."
The shots were even at 10, apiece, but the Falcons converted with both of their shots on goal.
Senior
Daniele De Angelis saved four shots for NDC, which is tied for his season-high, and picked up his fifth shutout of 2019. The 10 shots that De Angelis faced today was the second highest total in a game this season. Favero and Bohlin were credited with the assists.
Notre Dame hosts No. 8 University of Charleston, on October 20. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
