McHugh becomes program leader in kills against Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – An incredibly close five-set match resulted in a 3-2 victory for Urbana University over Notre Dame College, on Friday night. Although the Falcons did not walk away with the victory, senior Mary Kate McHugh broke the program record in career kills and the 132 digs recorded in the match by NDC also broke a program record.

The first set went in favor of the Falcons, although it was one of the most hard-fought sets of the season. The 31 points scored by Notre Dame is the most they have had to score in any set this season for a win. The set featured 12 ties and several long rallies. Although Urbana expanded their lead to five points (11-6), NDC always had an answer. The Falcons closed out the set and won, 31-29.

The second set was back-and-forth again, with neither team expanding their lead beyond four points. Ultimately, the Blue Knights came away with a victory, 25-22. Through two sets, McHugh and freshman Kaye Dregalla already had eight kills, while senior Alexandra Kaeberlein helped on the defensive end with 18 digs.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead in the third set and, later, used a 12-3 run to regain the lead and push it to eight (23-15). The Falcons won the set by a score of 25-17. Notre Dame's defense was up for the challenge and after just three sets, they had already accumulated 87 digs.

Although NDC won convincingly in the set prior, Urbana found energy in the fourth set. They jumped out to an early lead and expanded that lead to six points (13-7), using an 11-4 run. NDC would tie the game at 18, but a 7-2 run closed out the game for UU, who won, 25-20.

In the fifth set, Notre Dame held a 9-6 advantage, before Urbana put the next seven points on the scoreboard, with the help of six kills. The home team won the set, 15-11.

In a season that has seen records fall almost every night, Mary Kate McHugh became the program leader in career kills. With a season-high 19 kills on Friday, she now has 1,367 for her career. McHugh also recorded a season-high on the defensive side with 19 digs.

The Falcons were able to put up some incredible numbers. Alexandra Kaeberlein's 35 digs in the match is tied for the highest mark in a five-set match at NDC. Paige Staudacher totaled 56 assists, which is fourth most in a five-set match, and she had a career-high 28 digs. Sophomore Amelia Kaeberlein also had a career-high 23 digs. Freshman Kaye Dregalla added 17 kills and freshman Blaire Barr finished with 12. Notre Dame's 132 digs are the most that the program has ever put up in a match and their 62 assists are the second most in a match.

Urbana had four players who totaled 14, or more, kills with Maggie Burns leading the way with 16 kills. Anna Davis totaled 60 assists, while UU had 71 total assists. Natalie Perez led the way with seven of the Blue Knights' 11 blocks. And Urbana totaled 129 digs with Courtney Niesen at the top of the list, recording 44 digs.

The Falcons will travel to Wheeling University to battle the Cardinals, on October 10. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
