Notre Dame takes advantage of opportunities in win over Wesleyan

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – With just two weeks remaining in the Mountain East Conference schedule, Notre Dame College was looking to maintain second place against West Virginia Wesleyan College, who came into the game just one point behind the Falcons in the MEC standings. On Wednesday, Notre Dame's comeback effort was successful as they scored once in the first half and twice in the second to win, 3-1.

West Virginia Wesleyan was looking to grab victory from NDC for the second time this year, after winning in double-overtime on October 13. In the 19th minute a good looking opportunity was a little high as Joshua Tenney's shot nearly gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead, but the ball hit the crossbar. Buhle Dlamini gathered the ball after the ricochet and fired a second shot, which was blocked by a Notre Dame defender.

WVWC struck first in the 27th minute after Maycon Santos Dias used a free kick to find Luca Falconieri who gathered from 35 yards out. Falconieri pivoted and sent a strike into the net.

For just the fifth time this season, Notre Dame was not the first to score. But the Falcons did not trail for long, as junior Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin converted, using a free kick from just outside the box.

In the final 17 minutes of the first half, Notre Dame's defense did not allow West Virginia Wesleyan to take a shot, while NDC's offense had four more shots before halftime, but could not break the tie.

Two minutes into the second half, in the 47th minute, a foul was called on Wesleyan and just like déjà vu, Bohlin took the free kick just outside of the box and sank his second goal of the game into the right side of the net. The only difference was, the second free kick he shot came from the right side of the pitch. Bohlin now leads the team with eight goals and three game winners.

Sophomore Arthur Moraes entered the game in the 70th minute and immediately made an impact, taking a shot a minute later that was saved by WVWC goalkeeper Jeremy Collins. Moraes was called upon in the 86th minute to take a penalty shot, which he converted and gave NDC a 3-1 advantage.

"We knew that today we had to compete and fight all over the field to gain control of the game," said head coach Carl Nolan. "I think we did a decent job in the first half, but we were very good in the second half. West Virginia Wesleyan is a very well coached and motivated group that is always difficult to play against. It was a true team win today."

The Falcons put some space between them and the Bobcats in the MEC standings, now leading by four points. Moraes scored his second goal of the season, but first since September 8. Bohlin is second in the conference with eight goals.

The goalkeepers, NDC's senior Daniele De Angelis and Collins, entered the contest one and two in the conference in goals against average, at 0.76 and 1.07, respectively. NDC is the second team to score more than two goals on West Virginia Wesleyan this season, with Charleston being the other team.

Notre Dame will play Wheeling University, on November 4, which is a makeup of a game postponed on September 11. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
