FROSTBURG, Md. – Similar to the first meeting between Notre Dame College and Frostburg State University, the score was decided by one goal. On Saturday, Notre Dame's lone goal in the 45th minute was all the Falcons needed to defeat the Bobcats.
Within two minutes into the game, both senior
Julian Castro and junior
Evans Armah had taken a shot, on an early attack. The only shot on goal in the first half, came off the foot of senior
Giulio Bellei in the 22nd minute. Through the first 45 minutes, NDC out shot Frostburg State, 8-3. Bellei had three, himself.
Wasting no time, Notre Dame put the first point on the scoreboard less than a minute into the second stanza. A corner kick by junior
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin entered the box and was headed by senior
Lewis Norvock which grazed the goalkeeper, Joel Assal. Sophomore
Nicholas Felician was in the perfect spot as the ball bounced off the turf and he used his chest to knock the ball into the net. Both of Felician's goals this season have been game-winners.
Bellei continued to pelt the FSU goalkeeper in the season half, with a shot on goal in the 45th minute and the 56th minute. But Assal did not allow another goal.
"It was a very physical encounter that I think the players handled very well," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "The forwards led our attacking line very well, and the midfielders battled hard all of the game. It was a testing environment for our defenders and goalkeeper, so to keep a clean sheet was very pleasing."
Notre Dame finished the game outshooting the Bobcats, 17-9. As Coach Nolan mentioned, the physicality was on displayed as the teams combined for 38 fouls with Frostburg State being carded four times to NDC's one yellow card.
NDC's senior goalkeeper
Daniele De Angelis saved two shots, while Assal had five saves.
The Falcons will come home to battle West Virginia Wesleyan College, on October 30. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
