BECKLEY, W.Va. – No. 16 Notre Dame College scored a season-high five goals against Concord University, including four in the second half and two by freshman
Markus Hemioe, in a 5-0 road victory, on Sunday afternoon.
Notre Dame (8-2, 6-2 MEC) went right after Concord (2-6-1, 2-4-1 MEC) and took the opening shot of the game in the first minute. The Falcons took the first four shots of the game.
The Mountain Lions, who have lost five of their last six games, had their only shot on goal of the first half in the 11th minute when Maxime Ramioulle had a header that was saved by junior
Daniele De Angelis.
In the 25th minute, a penalty was called on Concord when goalkeeper Kyle Brown slid in front of junior
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque in the penalty box. Albuquerque rocketed the ball into the goal, on the penalty kick, past Brown who dove the opposite way.
"The players took control early in the first half with their energy levels," head coach
Carl Nolan, said. "They competed physically and it allowed us to get on the ball and settle."
In the 57th minute, following a free kick into the box, the ball was headed once before junior
Lewis Norvock kicked the ball into the net. Both junior
Paolo Termine and junior
Arthur Favero were credited with an assist.
One minute later, Concord's defense was trying to keep the ball away from NDC and move it up the pitch. However, a bad pass across the field was stolen by the Falcons and after a pass from sophomore
Varis Singh Khera to Favero, Notre Dame converted on the third goal of the contest.
Hemioe stole the show, beginning in the 68th minute when he scored his first goal of the season, hitting the upper right corner of the goal. Khera had the assist, again. Hemioe scored his second goal in the 69th minute, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard.
Notre Dame was not finished as they took seven additional shots in the 70th minute, or later. In the second half, the Falcons took 17 shots, overall.
"In the second half, we simply did a better job in front of goal," Nolan said. "We were a little more ruthless."
Favero now has eight goals on the season for Notre Dame, Albuquerque has four goals and Norvock has two goals. NDC took 31 shots and 15 shots on goal. De Angelis had three saves in the game. The Falcons' goalkeeper and the defense have put together seven shutouts, already this season. Nolan says the team is not doing anything too complex, and that has been working well.
"Defensively, we have been doing the simple things well," he said. "It's attention to basics."
Brown saved eight of the 13 shots that he faced, for Concord. CU took just five shots in the game, with three coming in the second half.
The Falcons will have a week off before they travel to West Liberty University on October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
