SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and then hung on, after Urbana University scored two goals in the second half, to win by a score of 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
Right after kickoff, the Falcons were aggressive in setting up their offense. In fact, they put the first goal on the board in the 2nd minute of the contest.
In the blink of an eye, the play developed in front of Urbana's goal and junior
Arthur Favero found junior
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque to put NDC on the board.
In the 32nd minute, freshman
Nicholas Felician had the ball and was working on the left side of goal. He passed the ball to opposite end of the goal where Albuquerque snuck the ball past a diving Urbana goalkeeper for his second goal of the half.
Notre Dame (7-2, 5-2 MEC) went into the halftime break with two shots-on-goal and two goals. Head coach
Carl Nolan was happy with what he saw from the Falcons.
"We started the game with a good energy and attitude and created an early chance and converted," Nolan explained. "The second goal came again through good persistence and sticking to what was asked of them before the game."
In the second half, Urbana (5-3-1, 4-2-1 MEC) worked at a much quicker pace, offensively. After a corner kick, Zach Poff tried to head the ball into goal in the 53rd minute, but junior
Daniele De Angelis reached up and grabbed the shot.
The Blue Knights got on the board in the 75th minute of action, when the ball was pin-balled around the box. Poff took a shot, which was blocked, and then Afonso Vieira converted on a goal during the confusion.
NDC did not waste any time expanding their lead, as Favero knocked in his seventh goal of the season. He worked the ball to the middle of the field, just outside of the penalty box, and his shot touched the upper right corner of the goal.
The Falcons would need that goal because Urbana added one more in the 81st minute. Nick Glasgow took a shot that De Angelis punched off of the top post. When the ball bounced back into play, Jake Wischmeier scored his second goal of the season, making the score, 3-2.
"Urbana brought a much more direct approach in the 2nd half," Nolan said. "They are very good at putting you under early pressure with longer passes. They combined that with really effective set pieces, and we knew it would be a battle. These games always are."
For the Falcons, Favero was credited with his second game-winning goal in as many games. Albuquerque had his first multi-goal game since October 18 of last season, when he scored two against Shepherd University. The win represents the first non-shutout victory of 2018 for NDC.
Poff and Glasgow were each credited with an assist for the Blue Knights. Today's loss snaps Urbana's three game winning streak.
The Falcons will travel to Athens, W.Va. and take on Concord University at 3:30 on September 30.
